Jaylon Smith Injury Update: NFL Draft Prospect Expected to Miss 2016 Season

Horrible news...hope that his knee isn't bad enough to curtail a career in the League. How unfortunate it would be that he could be out for 2016 let alone even longer.

Out for a year, would you take a flier on with with a 4th rounder? I would.

I'd do that with the 4th Rd comp pick at the bottom of the round... not the pick near the top of the round.

Didn't Willis McGahee have the same sort of prognosis? He looked pretty damn incredible when he was fully recovered.

Then there is Marcus Lattimore who just retired because he never fully healed...

Those were the names that came to my mind as well, but I don't believe either one of them suffered nerve damage. Lattimore dislocated his knee I believe, along with tearing pretty much every ligament in his knee and breaking a few bones in the process. I don't think, however that he suffered any nerve damage. Same with McGahee I think, bunch of torn ligaments but no nerve damage.

I'm having a hard time finding former players with a similar injury as Jaylon's (i.e. nerve damage). The one I've managed to find was Napolean McCallum's, but even without the nerve damage, his injury sounded especially devastating....

If anyone can find other players with similar injuries (specifically nerve damage) that would be appreciated, cause I'm having little luck.

And to the doctors on this board, can nerve damage be repaired? If so, do you need to let it heal over time or is it a surgical process? Recovery time?

If it is anything like Lattimore, it would be pointless to take him any time before the 4th round.

It just goes to show you every injury is different. Just because it was the same "type of tear", there are different levels of damage.

Keep in mind, one of the Cowboys surgeons was heavily involved here and we should have about as informed an opinion as anyone.

You don't draft a guy at all who may not play. If he goes undrafted maybe its worth a look for a redshirt

If the medicals don't improve come draft day, it may be in his best interest to pull a La'el and request teams not to draft him so he can go to a team of his own choosing as a udfa.

Said in another thread, apparently Smith is saying there is no nerve damage despite the reports that came out yesterday.

Rusty Medearis tore multiple ligaments, an artery and had nerve damage in his knee when he was injured in the Orange Bowl. He never played again.

A guy the Cowboys were very interested in, Kevin Mays, a center/guard prospect from Tennessee, tore two ligaments and had nerve damage during Senior Bowl practices. Mays never played again.

Sad news for him. But I thought I read somewhere he has insurance against falling out of 1st round. Jack has something similar. $5 million dollar policy if he falls out of 1st round due to injury.

Is this supposed nerve damage a result of the knee injury in the bowl game or a separate issue?

Someone will draft him way higher than we think. Watch it be Denver in the first round -- they pick last, might as well.

Word going around the Internet is that he has significant damage to the peroneal nerve (a branch of the sciatic nerve).

Very similar injury that Marcus Lattimore had...............he never played a down in the NFL.

3 teams have removed him from their draft boards...........I would not be surprised if nobody drafts him.

Spoke to an orthopedic doctor at a party last night. Big Chargers fan (originally from San Doego).

Said the nerve is definitely "pulled" more than likely and that the peroneal nerve can take up to a year to heal if it heals at all. Can be totally unpredictable. By summer Smith's knee could look so much better or he could still have issues with the nerve. His range of outcomes really is anywhere from never play again to a 10 year stud LB.

Did you thank him for clarifying the situation? ;)
