He needs to regrow a tendon. I'm not optimistic. It was too early for the risk. Too many holes to fill. Still no pass rusher/no secondary help.

Let's see what round three brings. I'm sure it will bring much gnashing of tears.....again.

Well the third rounder was met with more enthusiasm.

Of course KillerInstinct hated it.

I absolutely love the pick. His talent is undeniable but as far as him not playing this season, just think about it like this... we essentially traded our 2nd rounder this year for a top 5 overall first round pick next year. That's what kind of talent this guy has. Of course he has to recover well for that to come to fruition but I like those odds. I trust our medical staff giving this pick an okay. They had to have done extensive homework on this injury and it must've looked good enough to where he should be able to comeback strong. Whether that's in 2 years, 1 year, or 6 months... as long as he comes back, it'll be worth it. And with Jaylon already guaranteeing himself that he'll be playing in 2016 and him already running and training, those are great signs. I'm 100% on the Jaylon Smith bandwagon and can't wait to see him on the field dominating.

So you don't think he could have been had later than pick 34?

Sure he could've slipped to the 3rd round. But who knows... maybe 5 or 6 teams thought the same as we did and really wanted him but were gonna try to wait it out. Then it gets dangerous trying to hope he keeps falling. I usually agree with the idea of if your guy is there, don't risk it, just take him.

I wonder if you realize just how high a pick 34 is. If there is any chance of a player slipping to the 3rd you don't take him at 34. But then again I witnessed the cluster-***** going on in the war room at the time.

No he doesn't. When the tendons that stabilize the knee are torn like the ACL and LCL in this case, the connective tissue becomes load bearing and stretch when torqued like Jaylon did when he planted after getting pushed.

The nerves have about 5% of give and when he planted after he was pushed post injury, it stretched the nerve.

It sounds like axonotmesis which is a second degree nerve injury. Here is wiki on the general prognosis for such an injury:

Axonotmesis is usually the result of a more severe crush or contusion than neurapraxia, but can also occur when the nerve is stretched (without damage to the epineurium). There is usually an element of retrograde proximal degeneration of the axon, and for regeneration to occur, this loss must first be overcome. The regeneration fibers must cross the injury site and regeneration through the proximal or retrograde area of degeneration may require several weeks. Then the neuritis tip progresses down the distal site, such as the wrist or hand. Proximal lesion may grow distally as fast as 2 to 3 mm per day and distal lesion as slowly as 1.5 mm per day. Regeneration occurs over weeks to years.

Sound familiar? There are ~ 25mm in an inch.
