Jaylon Smith says he “absolutely” will play this year

that is a heartless thing to say,

Yeh ... I don't get it.

Smith is working out already with huge amounts of weight on his knee. If not over done, this will lead to more blood flow, oxygen and better healing.

If he's squatting 500 lbs and leg pressing 700lb already, maybe the time table could be this year.

Jaylon Smith is the best player in the draft by a long shot.

With that said..

These types of things usually never work out for us.

Will he play next year? Probably not. Who knows when he'll play and get to the level he was at before.

Meanwhile our defense suffers. Our secondary is awful and we don't have a starting D end.

"These types of things?" Both Sean Lee and Bruce Carter recovered from their injuries and still play in the NFL.

This isn't about the knee, it's about a nerve. He's a surgeon, not a neurologist. We still have literally no idea if Smith will ever play again.

I am quite aware of this, just reporting. You can read many articles and posts in this thread about the extent of the injury and the healing process. The fact that Jaylon says he has a tingling feeling is a good sign that it is healing, but only time will tell.

Somewhat true. The team surgeon is the only one that saw the inside of the knee and the nerve area. Also, a surgeon also has to have some knowledge of nerves, etc.

Right, he may never play again but no one knows more about the likelihood of recovery than probably the team surgeon.

Were you smoking weed? That causes programmed cancer cell death.

No oncologist will say it was God that cured you. Why you and not the 100K other people that pray for healing? Hmmm. Cuz you're special huh? Lol

Looks like we got another fedora tipper.

I love the selection of Jalen Smith, but I don't want him to play this year. We are not thin on LBs. There's no reason to play him. He was injured in his bowl game; give it time.

Next year, it's like you had an extra top 5 selection, and you have a replacement for McClain, one of the best MLBs in the league, a guy who is also very good blitzing. Picks 4 and 34 should never have been about needs for 2016; those draft choices should always be about superior talent acquisition.

I was just reading up on Albert Hollis and Marcus Lattimore who had similiar knee injuries. It seems likely Jaylon Smith has a good possibility of getting back on the field, but to what degree? The injury ended both players careers, though they did play rb which is a different animal when considering speed, cutting, etc. The main difference is Jaylon tore 2 of his 4 ligaments while lattimore and hollis tore 3 while dislocating the knee. Whats unclear is the severity of the nerve damage to Smith and if he will regain full feeling and be pain free.

Marcus Lattimore wanted it as bad as anyone and worked incredibly hard and couldn't come back from this injury. I have my doubts about whether Smith will.

Two different types of injuries structurally.... Lattimore's was way more severe.

Not only that, but you'd think that a surgeon would have a staff that includes a neurologist who would advise on such matters. These doctors are getting paid royally to perform surgeries and give accurate medical advice. I doubt very seriously one is going to make a suggestion just off the cuff.

Having said all that, don't rush Smith back. Let him take his time.

You guys think Broaddus had an inkling of this when he kept bringing up Larry Allen's shoulder and the importance of trusting your medical evaluations last week?

Not really. Jack was his pet cat and he kept on bringing it up in that context.
