Jaylon Smith's grade

I still like LVE. Jaylon is always a day late and a dollar short. I saw him ole' when he got walled off on one of the Charbage run plays . . . didn't even engage the blocker. That kind of weak effort speaks volumes to me.

Again, I blame Jerrah/Stephen for the reason we're stuck with him.

After this year, if Smith's not doing any better than a C grade, let him go, you should try to improve the team where you can, Cox may be the guy to replace him but I'd have to see how Cox performs this year before I'd do that...

Can't support a LB who doesn't meet an OL at POA, yet floats 7-8 yards off the LOS. Also makes drag down tackles 8 yards down field almost every tackle.

Some are encouraged because he made one or two plays at the LOS and I know one TFL, but that's what he's supposed to be doing. Play the rookie or Gifford and you'll see better results.

If he was a like a $2-3MM cap hit next year, I'd keep him. He's not. So he has to go.

I'm going with a C...... but here's the question. This was probably one of his better games since god knows how long but WHY?????
  • scheme
  • different position
  • Parson effect
BTW....raise your hand if you STILL think we should cut him immediately
I'll raise my hand for benching him immediately and bringing him in to give the starters a rest for a play or two (at the most).

Gifford isn't better than Smith. I'd play Cox more, however.

I’ll give credit where credit is due. I thought he looked solid overall and didn’t embarrass himself (or me). I was pleasantly surprised and would give him a B- grade.

I can't help but to think the money that the FO committed to Jaylon had much to do with Cox being kept out of the starting lineup.

The money will be paid whether or not Smith starts or sits the bench, it's not like they have to "get their money's worth" out of Smith.

I think it's more a matter of they want to see if Smith can improve under Quinn, and he has to play a lot to tell that...

Would it also be paid once Jaylon is cut? No. That's what I meant to impart. Jaylon will be retained this year, come hell or high water.

Oh I agree, but your post "Cox being kept out of the starting lineup." seems to refer to this year...

I believe Cox would probably be allowed to compete with Jaylon under normal circumstances but the money has always been a factor in going with the incumbent, whether they deserve it or not. Jerry and Stephen aren't about to lose face by allowing Cox to take over his spot. It wouldn't look good. Jerry always has the last word when it comes to hiring, firing and allowing competition. It can save the front office a lot of embarrassment. ;)

I thought he played well today to. You don't get away with rushing the passer with Parson's all game if you didn't get that performance from Neal, Jaylon and LVE. Jaylon isn't the ideal linebacker that I'd pay or even want on my team but the bar has been lowered to if he shows up and doesn't embarrass himself its a W. And yesterday he was decent I thought.

Quinn game plan shows how Jaylon can be an effective NFL role player. I can’t wait to see the snap break down. When your safeties and defensive linemen play as well as the Cowboys did today, you can hide Jaylon’s weaknesses. I would like to see Cox play but I get what Quinn is doing.

I see the fan bases utterly unhealthy obsession with Jaylon Smith continues.
Are you guys all faux media looking for attention and clicks or what?

He is a liability when on the field. He gets exposed in coverage, and he is slow on diagnosing plays and not aggressive enough filling his gap, shedding blocks, or physical enough at the point of attack.

Watched the highlights on one of the Chargers runs, and there he is " dog chasing cat" linebacking.... Finally makes the tackle after multiple yard gain... Enough
