Jaylon Smith's grade

I'm going with a C...... but here's the question. This was probably one of his better games since god knows how long but WHY?????

BTW....raise your hand if you STILL think we should cut him immediately
Confidence,

The entire defense played far better because they are a better coached team with some better players added into the mix.
Defense is still far from perfect but safety play has been a plus and added LB depth makes team far more versatile/deep.
And Quinn has shown an ability to make changes on the fly as needed to address issues rather than stubbornly riding one wide-open scheme.

I hater we keep focusing on Jaylon as he is just a symptom of the whole but his play was improved because he wasn't asked to cover as much ground or hung out to dry.

He wasn't asked to cover because he can't. They're working around his liabilities and he's riding on his reputation

He's not riding on anything.
He was essentially demoted and deservedly so based on poor play.
He is on the team because his money was fully GTD.

If he were the mental midgets from this forum he'd have quit rather just so his job when asked.
He made 10 tackles, zero missed with 3 of those being stops or impact plays in a game where this defense limited the Chargers impressive offense to 17 points.

He was asked to cover players in the passing game but yes no where near the insane level last year where he was matched up in massive zones.

Last week Micah was torched in the passing game. MLB aren't going o match up well 25 yards down the field very often. Even guys with truly elite speed like Parsons struggle there. Jaylon isn't even in the ballpark of that much like many MLB around the league so DC have to protect them.

But overall defensively the team has added better safeties which reduces the need for any MLB to cover as much ground.
And they've added LB depth so they don't need to leave a guy in the game 98% of the time to be picked apart.

The linebackers are actually a strength of the team. Parsons did pick on backup offensive tackle that held him at least 4 times with no penalties.
crazy that Parsons doesn't look thick or girthy but man he is deceptively strong and twitchy. He plays with great technique and FB IQ. He is the total package. That Kamara kid might be a hidden gem we uncovered btw. Keep your eye on him. He flashes.

I just rewatched that running into the kicker penalty against Kamara. The blocker tackled him into the kicker. These referees are awful. That could have been a disaster.

Jaylon led the Cowboys in tackles.. (again) .... but people still claiming HE is the problem... I will agree with those people when somebody else makes all those tackles..

I have been one of his biggest critics. However I will give him applause for breaking up that td pass at the goal line. Great play!

Quinn has to get high marks for his adaptability. His shifting of the chess pieces from last week was every bit as clever as what we saw from Moore on the offense. Yes one of Herbert's INTs looked like maybe it happened because Allen fell down but Kazee was going to pick that ball off even if Allen is able to finish his route. He was in the perfect position to make that play.. And you have to give Quinn a lot of credit for that.

The team would be better off getting Jabril Cox more involved to take over for Smith but I worry JJ & Co. are trying to save face after the BS contract they gave Smith.
Seems to be their MO sometimes.

agree. Refs were terrible all day.

He is a liability when on the field. He gets exposed in coverage, and he is slow on diagnosing plays and not aggressive enough filling his gap, shedding blocks, or physical enough at the point of attack.
When was the last time this guy got in the backfield? Remember when they labeled him like they are Parsons.

He is....but you know its funny I saw him and Ware when they were on Hard Knocks...granted, I think Ware is smaller now than when he played but they looked similar in size. Which is crazy....

Jabril Cox should be in his place. He is just better.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cox really is in his place but it's likely coming next year.

That way the FO saves face for their generosity with Jaylon. That's how they roll.

I've seen him get back there a few times but they don't blitz him nearly as much as they probably should. Well that was in years past...you'd clearly go with Parsons before him if you wanted to blitz a linebacker now.

You guys say this as if fans are stupid though lol....there's no "saving" face on Jaylon, Zeke or Lawrence at this point. Its common knowledge that even the most fair-weather fan knows their limitations and they aren't living up to their contract. I don't think the front office can trick this fanbase into thinking otherwise.

I'm pretty sure Jaylon had a TFL last week at Tampa.. But if you are expecting a 245 pound linebacker to consistently take on a 320 pound lineman at the point of attack I think you may wish to study up on physics a bit..
