Jaylon Smith's grade

Quinn game plan shows how Jaylon can be an effective NFL role player. I can’t wait to see the snap break down. When your safeties and defensive linemen play as well as the Cowboys did today, you can hide Jaylon’s weaknesses. I would like to see Cox play but I get what Quinn is doing.
That's what I'm waiting for to see how they broke down the snaps....that was the best these linebackers have looked in awhile......

Good post!

Based on what? Not disagreeing I just haven't seen much from him through 2 weeks.

Exactly. And I say that having already said they should start to integrate Cox more, maybe in passing situations and use his coverage skills.

This week might be a chance to see him more. Yes, Philly has hit a couple of big plays but if you look at the stats, Hurts throws a lot of short stuff. His air yards against Atlanta was the lowest amongst starting QBs in Week 1, for example. They are trying to force the ball to Reagor and Smith and let them YAC.

So Philly might try to attack us with more of that short stuff......... WR screens, etc.

Jaylon screwed up some yesterday but he made a few great plays. Gonna have to take the good with the bad when it comes to Jaylon.

Well the Chargers didn’t bother running the ball, so it didn’t leave Smith with too many choices to make I assume.

I agree and I'm for giving Cox more snaps. I believe in what he can BECOME. But I Think people talk about him like he's where Parson's is at and I just haven't seen enough to suggest that. Eagles are going to test them. I like our chances if its a shootout because I think you want them to be one dimensional and I think we have the speed to take care of Hurts on the ground.

B.
i'm not cutting him.
we need all hands on deck on that side of the ball.
Jaylon is better when he "stays in his lane" and doesn't try to do everything all the time.
he plays like his hair is on fire and it gets him in trouble.
less is more.
when he dials it back and stays under control...he's a helluva player.
i'm not cutting that.
i'm working on it.
to come back from that injury shows whats underneath that #9.
its worth working on.

I'm going with a C...... but here's the question. This was probably one of his better games since god knows how long but WHY?????
  • scheme
  • different position
  • Parson effect
BTW....raise your hand if you STILL think we should cut him immediately

Jaylon made a lot of tackles yesterday.

tied for the team lead in the game.

Lawrence is out eight weeks. Based on yesterday, Parsons is going to be playing a lot more end. Jaylon's a starting-caliber linebacker, so it's good to have him in the mix. There's a tendency to downplay his good plays and overemphasize his bad ones because many have made up their mind that he's not a good player. He made some good plays, more in this one than against Tampa.

I do think some of his problems were scheme-related. Almost everyone on defense seemed to play confused last year. The other thing I think was a major problem last year was the DT play in front of him.

Hopefully, yesterday's game is a sign that Quinn's scheme and the play up front are going to benefit both Jaylon and LVE.

I thought Jaylon played a decent game. He didn't look somewhat slow and not physical enough when he was cutting off players at the sidelines but I thought he was better in coverage.

I can't help but to think the money that the FO committed to Jaylon had much to do with Cox being kept out of the starting lineup.
Or they realize that Cox is a 4th round rookie who maybe hasn't done enough in practice or the pre-season to be ready to start in the NFL.
