funny not many were singing the praises of Earl Thomas when he was in the draft. I recall from here one he was a longhorn and Dallas needed to stay away from Texas players which always makes me laugh and 2 he was not a good tackler. Now I doubt you will find many here willing to stand up and say they were the ones who felt that way back then.

So true. Hindsight really is 20/20. I personally was more on board with trading up for Iupati in that draft. I remember the Eagles traded up to #13 and I was sure they were taking Thomas. They went with Brandon Graham instead. I guess the NFL didn't have Thomas down as an unblemished prospect, so we shouldn't hold Clinton-Dix to that standard either.

I was all in on Thomas not because I was a Longhorns fan but Thomas in my view was an oustanding player. Dallas ends up with Dez and I'm not complaining about that. :)

That was popular opinion to be sure.

Thomas had played a mix of CB and safety in college and they had given up a ton of yards to Crabtree in a big game.

The UT thing is very real in that so many of those guys are overrated by the board.
Thomas is really ironically, the one guy who wasn't.

But be it Shipley, Colt or even Leonard Davis, those guys have largely struggled to meet draft stock.

That's not really because they aren't good players but because be it UT, USC or Bama big time programs guys get overrated generally.
Those other two programs have as much trouble meeting draft status.

For me even though I'm a longhorns fan I do not take that into account when looking at young players entering the NFL. I don't care where you went to school. When others were talking up Vince Young I was one of the few saying he was not ready and needed to stay another season. Colt, I loved watching him at UT but knew he did not have the arm for the next level. Last year Kenny Vaccaro was a guy I really liked and felt he did pretty well for a rookie and expect him to improve as a player. No doubt big time programs can lead to people over valuing them based on the overall team accomplishments and that is something I try to avoid.

Berry was a 5th pick, Thomas a 14 but only because he was in the same class with Berry.

Dix isn't either guy but he is arguably the best centerfielder type since.
Dix doesn't have elite measurables so he should fall a bit but his tape and drill work insure he is a top 25 player.
His instincts and very good and that is huge for a free safety.
He isn't a blow up hitter but he tackles with great technique.
And he is one of the few college safeties to play any cover 1 or cover 0.

I'd rather have Donald at 16 but Dix would be on my shortlist.
I'd certainly have him over Martin.

Hammer meets nail. I don't get the hate towards Dix but barring injury next season I wouldn't be shocked that he makes a lot of posters on here eat crow by week 13..

It's not all that shocking.
All part of the normal over-correction curve average people attempt when faced with any issue.
We were bad on the OL for 2-3 years so now the over-correction is to improve OL with round 1 guys even though it was arguably our best overall unit last year.
DL was bad last year so over-correction says we need 4 new starts and 4 new back ups.

In 2 years we'll be over-correcting at Safety on this forum in all likelihood.

It is somewhat strange given we've been bad at safety for almost a decade now but people confuse CB selections with safeties I guess.
As if drafting DT is good enough so we could forever ignore DE or vice versa....
Any player you play 50 snaps a game is very important.
When you play terrible players that many snaps you are gonna get beat more often than not.
NFL coaches aren't going to take it easy on you in any area because you are bad there.

By the time the draft was close, most were against trading up for him, not drafting him.
