Charles Haley trade (Jimmy Johnson influenced) - Jerry Jones subtracted a key Hall of Fame bound veteran defensive powerhouse from the franchise chief Super Bowl contending rival of that era, San Francisco.
Hershel Walker trade (Jimmy Johnson influenced) - along with future picks, Jones secured a cornerback (Isacc Holt), a defensive end (Alex Stewart) and two linebackers (David Howard and Jesse Solomon) targeted for immediate insertion into and upgrade of a modest defense. And Walker? He was one of the stars of the short-lived USFL and former Heisman Trophy winner. Who was going to start over him?
Joey Galloway trade - Michael Irvin gone. Huge hole at #1 wide receiver. Jones' unrealized gift to Troy Aikman. Next
Roy Williams trade - Jones wanted another 'number one' wide receiver opposite Terrell Owens. Bad. Next.
Amari Cooper trade - Cole Beasley, Tavon Austin and Allen Hurns were not cutting it. Jones was
desperate to salvage the 2018 season because of a sputtering offense.
Or does the point of contention involve draft day trades?
- Emmitt Smith - projected immediate starter (WHO was his realistic competition to block him?)
- Dez Bryant - (coming back to this)
- DeMarcus Lawrence - Jones had starting ends like Jeremy Mincey and George Selvie. I repeat. Jones had starting ends like Jeremy Mincey and George Selvie. Can I get all owls in the house to say, "Who Who? Who Who" Note: Lawrence was not a full-time starter until his second season, displacing... who again?
Maybe I have missed a Jones trade intended for an expected impact player to immediately start. Perhaps you can post one or more?
Back to Bryant. He was always going to replace Roy Williams sooner than later. Williams never lived up to being a #1
regular season wide receiver for Jones. Scratch that. Williams barely lived up to being a solid #2
regular season wide receiver for Jones. The price he paid to trade for Williams was not on par with the two first rounders for Galloway but the 20th, 82nd and 192nd overall picks were notable for a team strapped for drafting capital. Williams was never a long-term barrier for Bryant to ascend to full-time starter.
Comparing the above 'trades for immediate' return to the Trey Lance acquisition is a stretch. Also, none of these are trades akin to what Jones initiated to replace a starting franchise quarterback, of which he has had only three in Aikman, Tony Romo and Dak Prescott.
~Yeah yeah, fellow members. Franchise quarterback does not mean what I mean. Tell it to Jones already. lol.~
Jones could have bit on a first round Paxton Lynch. Did not. He stayed firm and picked Ezekiel Elliott. He has stated strongly wanting Lynch. Maybe strongly enough to unseat Tony Romo, right?
Jones could have bit on a first round Trey Lance. Did not. He stuck to the board and picked Micah Parsons. He REALLY wanted to start Lance over Prescott then, right?
Serious request. Demonstrate your opinion of Jones' thinking 'I've finally gotten my hands on Lance who I wanted two years ago and I will dump Prescott like a hot rock ASAP.' I mean. Because. All of the above? THAT'S what Jerry Jones has actually done according to your hypothetical.
