Jerry Gives Insight on Reasoning Behind Taking Smith @ #9

I disagree with that. They got one of the premiere playmakers in the draft and a badly missing last piece, and in the end that 1st rounder is going to be very

How is WR a missing piece for them?

No, Atlanta got rapped. No ifs ands or buts about it.

If go go by the points chart, and use the idea that points wise, next years first round pick, has the same points as this year second round DP, Atlanta actually comes out ahead points wise in the trade:

#6: 1600 points

#27: 680
#59: 310
#123: 49
2012 first round pick: (point value of #59 this year 310)
2012 fourth round pick: (point value of #155 this year 30.4)
total: 1377.4 points

I agree 100%! I hope Julio can play DB for them. Remember when Rogers played the best playoff game in history in there building a couple of months back? Crazy trade!

And Green Bay didn't "need" Aaron Rogers when they still had Brett Farve but they spent a 1st round pick on him and let him sit 3 years because he was to good of a value. If we have Andy Dalton as a mid first round QB, they there comes a time when you just have to take BPA.

And how does planning on signing Huff (who we we are not guaranteed to get even if we want him) keep us from drafting Williams. Even if we sign Huff, we still don't have a FS currently signed for next year. We supposedly would like to sign Sensy to a contact extension, but that is not a sure thing to happen. Besides could you not move Huff to SS even if you do sign him, and let Williams play FS. Or maybe Dallas thinks Williams could play CB as well....
Favre was already in his late 30's though. Romo is still young enough that any young qb would hit free agency before he was ready to hang it up.

Low rating a future #1 is one of the major flaws of the chart.

Agreed.

The chart loses its practicality when you ditch the conceptual side of it for reality.

Atlanta gave up a king's ransom for a nice prospect. I don't believe Julio Jones is the Second Coming.

When I factor in what they gave up to move up and the player they actually selected, I think they shot their wad.

Yeah, I'm on the side that ATL way overpaid. I always hate these trades where a team thinks they're "one player away" and they give up the ranch for one player. Jones was a great college player, but he didn't play nearly as fast or explosive as what he timed.

And I was saying it yesterday, but Norm was saying that they really wanted AJ Green. So not only did they pay a fortune, they paid a fortune for their second choice. I don't think that's the way to do it.

Yeah, I agree that Cleveland screwed the pooch. Isn't Taylor just another Shaun Rogers? Plenty of elite options and they bailed too far.

Then again, Holmgren understands its a rebuilding team so it's not like they're in a rush to win now

Even if you give the future draft picks the identical value as the current picks you still get a value of 1764 points to move up to #6 which has a point value of 1600. And draft picks in the future are not as valuable as draft picks this year.

To move up from #27 to #6 will always take a kings ransom. So even if you gave the identical point values to the future picks as they have this year, at worst for Atlanta, you come out with slightly over paying.

Now, I am not commenting on how smart it is to move up for Julio Jones, I personally am always cautious when one of the negatives for a WR is questionable hands.

Assuming that pick is at 27 again next year, that 310 value for 59 is worth 680 points the following year. So the value more than doubles during the year. Wish I had a few investments like that.

If Aaron Williams or Andy Dalton is at #40, I don't think we'll trade.
So with only 1 2nd rounder, you still think we would burn it on Dalton?

I thought that scenario was if we traded back and picked up an extra 2nd.

Cincy loves Dalton anyway, so I assume he does not drop past that unless Bowers is still there too.

I've heard them make mention of RB quite a bit. Don't be suprised if they draft Taiwan Jones in the 2nd. Buh Bye Barber. They had him in for a visit and he runs a whole lot like Felix (4.29 40 at Pro Day). If you think about it, they might be thinking it would be better to have a back-up in case Felix get's hurt again, as opposed to someone who is Barber-esque. They already have that to a certain degree with Choice. Homerun Hitters can be huge for an offense, and Taiwan fit's that description.

There's a huge drop off from White to their next WR. They had a big need for another WR.

Having said that, this was a great year to find a WR after those top two.
There will be a buch taken in the next 2-3 rounds.

I do think they overpaid though.
