DJ is not signing for the vet minimum on a team with a $60M QB on the roster. He will have multiple offers, as teams will think they can fix him.
He has to clear waivers first since the trade deadline passed (see above), if teams think they can fix him they would only have to pay him $450,000 the rest of the season to try.

Right now he would have to clear waivers since it is after the trade deadline. We are currently 9th on the waiver wire. Yes, that team would have to pick up the remainder of his base salary, but for this year it was only $1,080,000, so that is about $450,000. They could then cut him with no cap issues after the season if they wanted to.

Not saying a team will do this, but here is the 8 in front of us. There are a couple teams in there who may want to roll the dice and give him a cheap look.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars, 2-9
2. Tennessee Titans, 2-8
3. New York Giants, 2-8
4. Las Vegas Raiders, 2-8
5. New England Patriots, 3-8
6. New York Jets, 3-8
7. Cleveland Browns, 3-8
8. Carolina Panthers, 3-7
9. Dallas Cowboys, 3-7

Here is the link to the full current waiver wire order and rules (in case someone wants to see it):

Obviously, we shouldn't be trying to claim him off waivers, but, if we can get him after he clears waivers, I'd love that!!

Exactly, all the more reason it makes sense for us to try to sign him after he clears waivers.

Well think about it. Signing him when the waivers clear on the week leading into a game against his old team? How could Jerry NOT market it? I mean, this is Jerry we're taking about.
well, I don't exactly know how hte waivers work, which if somebody picks him off the waivers, are they responsible for the rest of his salary and contract, vs. he clears waivers and he can sign with anyone.
if we pick him off the waivers, then are we not obligated through 26 before he is actually a FA. I don't think you get comps for cutting a player loose.

If we claim him off waivers we have no obligation. We could cut him at any time with no cap repercussions. We would have to pay 7/17th of his base $1,080,000 base salary for the year (approximately $450,000). No you would not get anything pick wise if you cut him after the season.

That said, I did not bring up the waiver wire because I thought we would pick him up, I did so because there are other teams who may.

Correct. My point in mentioning waivers is that there are some teams who may decide to pick him up for the rest of the season, at less than half a million in cap, via waivers. The Raiders, Panthers (with a new QB-focused head coach), Titans, Browns, and maybe even the Jets to name a few. Not saying they will, but stranger things have happened. I was not advocating for us doing so.

Jones career could have taken a far different path if he was drafted by another team. The Giants had a deeply flawed roster for much of his time there, and there was a lot of coaching instability.

Fur sure, but yeah, I think his contract means he clears waivers.

I wouldn’t mind him for next years backup if cheap enough. But, in no way do I want him starting any game this season. The goal now is to get the highest pick possible. Keep rolling with Rush :muttley:

With the news about Daniel Jones being released today, Jerry has an opportunity to do the funniest thing ever. Daniel Jones is going to have the rest of his salary paid by the Giants. We play the Giants on Thanksgiving. We could sign Daniel Jones for vet minimum for the rest of the year, and we can start him against his old team on Thanksgiving.

Besides, let's be honest, Rush or Lance vs DeVito? Yawwwwwn. Jones against his old team? Oh yeah!!! And, if he signs elsewhere after the season, we would get the comp pick for it. It's a win win.
It wouldn’t be very funny if Daniel Jones stunk it up leading to yet another blowout loss at home. Would lead to a huge backfire if that happened. Besides even if we signed Jones today he wouldn’t be ready to start on Thursday. It would take at least a couple of weeks to get him up to speed with our offense and to become somewhat familiar with our receivers.

Do you guys actually want wins at this point? Why? The higher draft pick could be the difference between an all pro DT or LT and a lesser player

I think it would probably increase our chances of winning a game or two. So, I will pass on this move.
He’s definitely better than anyone our roster active or injured but not the guy we’re looking for. I’m with you…hard pass. We’re looking for draft position this season and next.

Lol, that'd be hilarious too. Either way, it'd be funny.

The organization would look even worse starting a QB on Thanksgiving that’s been with the team s few days. However, the Rams won a game with Baker Mayfield after he arrived only 2 days earlier.

Exactly, and he'd be playing his old team.

As long as we can stay in the top 10 range, I'm good with either option, but here's the advantage of getting DJ. Let's say we play him and he only wins one game down the stretch but looks decent. We could theoretically get a decent draft pick. Especially, this would be a ploy to try to get a player on vet minimum to then turn around and try to score a comp pick for him. So, we'd be getting a free pick for him.
