Jones stressed several times how well compensated Houck was during the season. Perhaps that was a subtle reminder and hopefully he is not smitten with him. I am more concerned about Garrett's role in that honestly. He and Houck go all the way back and for all we know, Jones overrruling Phillips could have been abiding to Garrett's wishes. Remember, Jones loved Houck so much he was allowed to leave when Coach Parcells took over.

I'm sure that's what it was.

You'd hope that Wade pretty much batting 1.000 last offseason in wanting Brooking, Igor, Decamillis, etc. would give him some credibility in Jerry's eyes, but I doubt it overrides his love for an old FOJ like Houck.

Maybe even more importantly, I think Houck is still under contract, and I doubt Houck leaves a million dollars on the table. Most people wouldn't.

Houck has to be close to retiring, so that might be a possibility. Wasn't he going to retire last year before we called him?

Like Jared Allen, Bart Scott, Drew Brees and Brett Favre didn't work? The problem isn't the way you find players, the problem is which players you find.

Well depends on what you mean by worked out.

Do you mean got a playoff win or two for their team? Sure that worked out. Win a superbowl? Not yet but one of them could.

he has to go after at least 1 big FA or trade......

after our loss and how we got beat, I'm not that confident in the O....its like we have weapons...but only 1 true WR who is explosive...and 1 WR is is still Raw, but explosive

yes i know, we just need to get the line Fixed, get rid of barber n maybe Garret as well......but i feel we need a big splash to get everyone talking, even us as cowboys fan, to make us look even more dangerous then we are...and too have the whole league scared

i think we should really go after Marshall, if we can trade RW11(who i haven't given up on yet, but come on) lets do it, josh has already shown he will settle for a less headache, i mean Cutler for orton? who the heck would have made that at that point?

i say we go after another Threat, either in the draft or trade.....WR or another pass rusher(DE) with our secondary, another pass rusher wouldn't hurt

not just no but hell no

and RW is not tradable as is.

I hope you mean the big move is a bowel movement.

We aren't the Commanders. That crap doesn't work.
:lmao2::lmao2::lmao2:

Not to mention we have some of our own Free Agents we need to sign. Austin, Sensabaugh, Ball to name a few that need contracts.

I have read some people claiming this is 1991 all over again. Laughable. The 1991 team had serious issues with the pass rush and pass defense and we went out and improved the team with Haley, Darren Woodson and Kevin Smith. And unless some bold moves take place, we will be fortunate to duplicate this year's "success" which honestly was little more than a baby step.

Each season is different and next year's team needs to be different. All of this talk of simply hoping for a few pieces here or there is troubling. We need another shake-up. Progress stoppers were flushed last year (Ellis, Terrell Owens) and we saw the benefits, and honestly one of them (Austin) was by sheer accident. That cannot repeat itself. Players like Barber and Williams need to be challenged as progress stoppers.

What Sunday showed is that we really need more playmakers on both sides of the football.

Felix Jones was the only player on offense who I believe has that dimension. Austin is your number one, but we cannot expect teams to simply ignore him going forward--it is going to get tougher for him and he will probably have a dip in production next season if we march Roy Williams right back out there. Williams is a lost cause as far as I am concerned. I don't even care whose "fault" it is anymore. I don't care if it is his, Romo's, Garrett's, it just does not matter. He is not and apparently cannot become a threat. He's not what we thought and moreover, he is not what we need. I realize Stephen and Jerry are allergic to drafting WRs. But we need to take a shot. The OL is self-evident and has been something anyone with a brain should have seen this past April. In a way, Sunday was excellent because it might have tempered the false sense of security people had over Doug Free. The problems are all across the line and we were fortunate to avoid injuries all season long.

On defense, we need something at safety. I am not sure what, but we just do not have it. You can win games with Sensabaugh, but neither he nor Hamlin is able to make plays. The entire secondary lacks a ballhawk except for Jenkins. I hope that a light goes on for Jason Williams at inside linebacker because we need some more speed. We also need some more help for Ratliff as he disappeared at times and was neutralized by a second year player like John Sullivan.

We have a few "chips" so to speak we could look to trade. Barber and Bennett for starters. I am perfectly fine with going to war with John Phillips and Tashard Choice at this juncture.

We just cannot stand pat and expect things to get easier next season simply because we are going with more of the same. That's the idea I see being preached now and it is not comforting.

We took a baby step this year, but to make another step we need to actually take it and not expect it to be just a side effect of time. It is nice to enjoy the "progress" but I want that Viking game put on a loop as they showed us exactly how far we have to mature. Unfortunately, I do not think anyone in the organization took that thrashing to the level they needed to. It was almost some were pretending it was some sort of anomaly.

Good, fair thoughts.

I think you make a terrific point that seasons take on different looks and we have to be more proactive than to only replace the things that "look" bad right now. Meaning the offensive line, for instance, can't be our only focus this offseason.

It's like the year the Raiders drafted Janikowski. They said, 'Hey, we lost a bunch of games because of our FG kicker. With Jankikowski, we would have gone deep into the playoffs!' With Janikowski, I'm pretty sure they didn't fare much better the next year despite getting better at that one position.

You also make a terrific point about being proactive with challenging the progress stoppers. I don't know that Roy and Barber have to be gotten rid of (if there are attitude concerns, then, yeah), but it'll be a major punch in the gut if they're in the starting lineup next year.

But I do think it's important to make this clarification and distinction from some of the posts in this thread: While we need to continue looking to improve this team, I'm not convinced the way to go is to make splashy, big-name signings and trades.

Take the Brandon Marshall scenario. Yeah, he makes the Madden version of the offense unstoppable. But in reality we're adding another No. 1 when we already have a No. 1, and we're doing it by adding a guy with a childish demeanor. Is there any quicker way to ruin our offensive chemistry than to add a guy like this?

yea i just want something to happen too give me faith, and keep me happy, because as is...i am only excited about the D

but if we go on with continuity at all spots....it will hurt us....i am tired of Garret...i am so sick of the drive killing penalties by the o line...like why do it at the 30 yard line, when we have at least a field goal at hand? This offense is sickening at times..before Sensabaugh was made looking like a fool....we should have had either 6-10-or 14 points up on the board

There isn't anyone to trade for to make that splash.

Brandon Marshall would be a huge mistake and cost way too much and no way does jerry trade another first for a WR.

FA looks shallow this year but the draft is loaded with potential superstars. I would look for Jerry to do some wheelin n dealin in April.

If anything we need more depth at o-line. I dont think anyone expected Flo to go down and once he did we were really done for.

:starspin While we could use some help at other positions as well, OL is an area that I hope we focus on. Either through the draft and/or trade or free agency, I don't care. Although considering how we haven't exactly had stellar luck with our OL picks in recent years, if we go via free agent or trade, I wouldn't complain.

You need us to do something stupid (like impact our cap room) to give you faith? Couldn't you just pray in the woods for some faith?

Which free agent do you have in mind? Or can it just be any free agent that costs a lot?

I largely agree wit yew but when it comes to drafting WRs, forgit it.

If there were no glaring needs on the O-line, kicker and secondary I could go for a WR draft project we could groom.

However, with the emergence of Austin, the continuing contributions by Witten and Crayfish and the promise of Ogle and Phillips, we can afford to put off drafting a WR for at least two years.

harumph!
