That is 4 starters...at least.

That is big contributers.

These are not draft picks.
It's mostly luck. They took chances on guys who were cheap and had been major disappointments (Kearse for example) and those wallowing after having some injuries (Hooker).

It worked out. But history shows that these bargain bin guys that the Cowboys seek each year tend to bomb out way more than they work. For every Kearse, there a dozen Nolan Carrolls.

And let's be clear. It's not wrong to bring in a guy like Kearse or Hooker. It's tough filling out a 53 man roster. But every team adds these kinds of guys. But few use them exclusively, and we are one of those few. If the Cowboys went out this offseason and added say Tomlinson at DT and the backfilled some other positions with Hooker level signings, that's fine by me. The problem is they literally ignore adding legit playmakers/great players and solely focus on the bargain bin.

It's not working.

If they had to perform to keep their jobs you can bet your backside their FA philosophy would be different.

I mean there is a gambling risk to it sure. It is the ol' Mickeyism...If they are so good....

But they always loved Hooker since the draft...no surprise they take a shot at him and it worked. Listening to McClay talk about Kearse...they loved him in Detroit and thought his skills would translate.

He is enjoying the attention and the coverage he is getting. He needs to be careful (I doubt he will ever be) because his sound will be redundant and people will just walk away. The value he built the Cowboys to be will soon plummet, especially with the emergence of super stars like Mahomes, Burrow,Herbet, etc. and young fans being drawn to those starts and their teams.

One time, Manchester United was the most valuable sports team in the world, once Alex Ferguson left, that stock went into a free fall. Jerry and his antics are wearing thin on people and sooner or later the followers will drop.

For us fans, we are in a dangerous area here. Because Jerry is 80+ and he is in a "having fun" mode now. In his mind, I did it all, I enjoyed it all, and will use the remaining period of my life enjoying the spoils.

So you think signing a bunch of guys to vet minimum contracts is utilizing FA effectively? Gotcha

But again both guys, for various reasons, where bargain bin guys. They didn't have many suitors, etc. They were the ideal Cowboys FA signing. But banking on you hitting on a Kearse and Hooker every single year is ridiculous and a big reason why this franchise just is never talented enough to go beyond where they typically go. This team is a case study in how successful a team can be just going cheap in FA. And yet we ignore it over and over.

The notion that the draft and bargain bin FAs can build a SB winning team keeps failing. But gosh darn, those Jones boys are gonna keep doing it!

No, I would do more...not sign 33 year old players to mega deals but I would be more aggressive.

For instance...If Payne makes it to FA, i go all in. He is young, dominant, weakens a division rival and fills a HUGE need.
