And he averaged 2.7 and 3.1 in the first two games.
In his lean years in Oakland, he also had some games where his average was high, but overall he averaged fewer than 4 yards per carry.
What I see is a back who can hit the hole and go if the play is executed as designed. He has the burst and speed to take it the distance. But he's also a back who hesitates when the play isn't executed as designed and goes down too easily on contact because he doesn't have great balance. I don't think he could have made the long TD run that Randle did where he bounced around left end.
Yes, that's a reasonable description of McFadden this season.
Murray had some issues adjusting to this scheme when Callahan first got here. Murray learned to make quicker decisions as he adjusted to this scheme.
I also think the coaches need to coach McFadden differently than Murray or Randle. The coaches discourage running far outside and really want the runner to cut it up field just off Tackle on most outside runs; however, McFadden can out run defenders to the far corner better than Murray/Randle. I think they should try to get him outside more. That could result the defense being more spread out when he does run inside.
Yes, McFadden likely wouldn't have made that exact run that Randle made; however, if that run was actually designed to go far outside from the beginning, then McFadden might have made the TD also. The stopping and starting that Randle did on that play is definitely not what McFadden should be doing.
On the flip side, I don't know if Randle would have scored on the play where McFadden had a TD. McFadden ran to the far outside on his TD which was possible because of his speed.
