Wake would be cool. We need a 2017 version of Peppers, Ware, or Freeney if we aren't going after JPP. Who that is, admittedly, I don't know. And maybe those three are situational 4-3 ends that can contribute, even, next year. We have to shore up our DE position.

A 4-6m AAV player, is, whom I presume you are referring to, Darth. Wake is intriguing. Is he a FA?
He is not, but he could be a cap casualtie

Haven't read through the mega posts yet.
But by refusing to spend a little more on FA and a top FA, and go cheap and under the radar type guys,....
We get the Benson Mayowa"s of the NFL.

And can't ignore FA altogether any more, and rely so let on the draft. As seems we waste our 2nd round picks, and don't hit on 5th rounders. 4th rounders seem to take a while to show something except for Dak.
We got lucky on the 6th round in Brown but usually produce nothing.
7th round they always use for PS gambling type picks. Except Swaim may be working out except for he is injured now.

So they really need to nail this next draft then.
Guys like Thornton are the way to go. Good player not an expensive long term deal.

Bargin bin players like Mayowa and Gachkar are a complete waste of cap space. You are giving vet contracts for players who there former team probably easily replaced with a UDFA

another successful pattern is;......
Free agency is an anticlimactic time of year for the New England Patriots.

There are always so many high-profile players available, and seldom if ever do they end up in a Patriots uniform. Sure, there are notable exceptions like corner back Darrell Revis in 2014 and linebacker Adalius Thomas in 2007, but that’s not the usual M.O.

More often, we can expect the Patriots to wait until the second wave of free agency. The Patriots watch as the big-ticket, top-dollar players sign elsewhere, and wait for the market to come to them. Second-wave signings have worked out in the past; it’s how the Patriots landed Brandon LaFell in 2014, and Jabaal Sheard in 2015.

I would also add to your long list of exceptions the names of Rodney Harrison, Randy Moss, Aquib Talib, Martellus Bennett, Wes Welker, et al. Pats are not great drafters they are great at acquiring picks but always find a standout in FA every season it seems.

A lot of those guys were technically trades, but they were undervalued by their teams

NE drafting isn't as great as advertised...they just churn until they find the right guys that buy into their system...it helps having Brady and Belichick too

They can't be copied IMO.....just like GB is unique in the way the build their team

DAL just needs to be DAL and not worry what NE, DEN, BAL or GB does

Agreed. They built their OL and ball control limited mistakes offense, now go get some defensive vets to lead and pressure QB on very young but talented and takeaway minded D.

As long as Jerry in not 100% in on guys like Smith, Gregory and Lawrence, I'm fine with that. But if he's building the D around players like that, we'll waste several years. Hopefully Smith will become the player he was in college but he is an unknown right now. We need guys on the field, not constantly nursing injuries or serving suspensions. There's good players to be had in FA that won't break the bank.....
We need to save our money on the many great players whose contracts will be coming due down the road. Draft great players-period. It's how great teams stay great. All you have to do is look at the Pats. They might spend a few bucks in FA, but almost always get great bargains.

What I expect us to do picking around 30th or so in the 1st round, is trade up in the 1st round to grab 1 of the blue chip immediate impact edge rushers in the middle of the round.

You had me until you went after the Senator....Jones has solidified the Defensive Backfield

I love Byron Jones. He can play corner, slot, box safety, and even free safety. I love that he is all over the field and can cover anyone from Rob Gronkowski to Antonio Brown. My only concern is the zero career interceptions.

I want Byron on this defense for the next decade.

JPP may not get what he thinks he can get
Pass rusher bring a premium price but he has had injuries, not his greatest season and teams know he will play hard ball on contracts
The market may not be as big as it once would have been

From what's been posted elsewhere about this, it seems JPP isn't interested in moving on from the Giants and the Giants don't seem to want to let him go.

In other words, don't look for Dallas to be able to pry him away. I think he takes a "hometown discount" and signs with the G-men.

My guess is that hometown discount only comes about if there are no better offers. I just don't think his market value is gonna be all that huge but we shall see
Personally I rather build thru the draft but elite pass rusher don't last till 32 so we need a Dak Prescott type pick at de and all will be great

Even at the time, knowing that was the thought process, it was baffling. Especially considering Wares release and the hardline stance with Demarco. Just a strange move all around.

Yea, I never understood it myself either. They play hardball with Ware and Demarco on contracts and yet give a player that has done basically nothing in his entire career an enormous pay increase for basically no reason.

I think everybody on this board would rather have Ware right now than Crawford.

I don't hear people calling for us to bring in an elite young pass rushers from free agency.

What I do hear, is people calling for us to find a proven DE who may be past him prime but can contribute. Guys like Freeney, Peppers, Abraham, Ware, etc have been available to be picked up in FA for a reasonable price and been able to help their teams. Right now we have no one who can get any pressure from the outside, picking up a guy like Cameron Wake in the off season would be a nice stop gap.

We need more than a stop gap at defensive end though. We need a difference maker. Dwight Freeney hasn't been that I'm 3 years.
