Jerry Jones Doesn't Expect Cowboys To Be Big Spenders In Free Agency

Sure but they all have to be rookies at some point. And the guys in FA are not Khalil Mack and JJ Watt. Those guys don't make it to FA.

We have a window, Bellomy. Let's attack this window with deftness (in FA'ency) and smart, defensive drafting.

LaRoi Glover I think we gave a big contract to. Rocket Ismael? I guess if we're counting RW11 then we might throw Joey Galloway in there. I wouldn't say getting other teams players have been hugely successful for us.
Right...that is a handful over 20 years.......my point is we have never been big spenders under JJones but he this reputation of buying whoever he wants.......it simply isn't true

As average as Carr was he still played every week for 5 seasons and didn't prevent us from signing or playing anyone

The trading for and drafting Claiborne had just as big a negative impact but everyone just forgets that when warning us about the dangers of FA

Oh I get that. It takes time to build a consistent pass rush. Limited initial returns shouldnt dissuade up. I think you use the draft to find your long term edge rusher and use free agency to find a short term fix. Like a Ware

I'd like both. We need a Haley AND a Jeffcoat.
We are kind of in limbo.....if we knew about Tapper and Gregory it would clear things up

TCrawford and DLawrence both look a 1/2 step off and maybe out of position....I love TCrawford against the run as SDE but he can't seem to get home......same with DLaw at WDE.....he is always right there close

IDK if signing a CJones or MIngram or JPP is the answer but it couldn't hurt if those guys can't come back

Super bowl caliber and Super bowl winner are not necessarily the same. Follow Landry, Jimmy and Elway's methods. Those are actually proven to produce multiple Super Bowl appearances, but more importantly WINS.
another successful pattern is;......
Free agency is an anticlimactic time of year for the New England Patriots.

There are always so many high-profile players available, and seldom if ever do they end up in a Patriots uniform. Sure, there are notable exceptions like corner back Darrell Revis in 2014 and linebacker Adalius Thomas in 2007, but that’s not the usual M.O.

More often, we can expect the Patriots to wait until the second wave of free agency. The Patriots watch as the big-ticket, top-dollar players sign elsewhere, and wait for the market to come to them. Second-wave signings have worked out in the past; it’s how the Patriots landed Brandon LaFell in 2014, and Jabaal Sheard in 2015.

Lafell did nothing in NE and Sheard was a healthy scratch last week.....not exactly big wins

Man I get what you are saying but I hope you aren't suggesting spending big, even on one player. The only time that's worked for us is signing #21, and he was arguably the best player in the NFL. If that guy is there then ok, but you won't see that this offseason. Looking at the Giants, and the Commanders who broke the bank for Norman, just not getting the returns in the W column, both starting up at a team built through the draft.

Vernon and Norman have been big wins for the Giants and Commanders....the losses aren't on them

I would take either right now in a heartbeat

FA is over-spending by definition.......but it only costs money and not draft picks or trades

And this is, precisely, the point of us advocating a nice, single, FA signing, Marine.

Naw. DE's cost to much in FA now. For a young pass rushed yoy are paying well above market. Jones and Ingram will get paid close to what Watt makes on the free market.

Where we need to be in the FA market is the guys like Ware, Peppers and Wake. Guys who will play only on passing downs at this point in there careers and will get short term deals well south of 10 million. Gives you as much rushing ability as the top FAs at a fraction of the cost and a mentor for any DE's you draft

Giants are actually getting big returns in the win collumn for there additions. Their team is significantly better then last year

Wake would be cool. We need a 2017 version of Peppers, Ware, or Freeney if we aren't going after JPP. Who that is, admittedly, I don't know. And maybe those three are situational 4-3 ends that can contribute, even, next year. We have to shore up our DE position.

A 4-6m AAV player, is, whom I presume you are referring to, Darth. Wake is intriguing. Is he a FA?

Haven't read through the mega posts yet.
But by refusing to spend a little more on FA and a top FA, and go cheap and under the radar type guys,....
We get the Benson Mayowa"s of the NFL.

And can't ignore FA altogether any more, and rely so let on the draft. As seems we waste our 2nd round picks, and don't hit on 5th rounders. 4th rounders seem to take a while to show something except for Dak.
We got lucky on the 6th round in Brown but usually produce nothing.
7th round they always use for PS gambling type picks. Except Swaim may be working out except for he is injured now.

So they really need to nail this next draft then.
