Jerry Jones Hopeful Cowboys Can Spark Their Ground Game Against Atlanta

Several member of the Cowboys organization have pointed it out, including Jones and Cowboys coach Jason Garret, and it’s a valid argument: circumstances haven’t been ideal for a ground-and-pound gameplan through two weeks. In the season opener, the Cowboys fell behind by double digits in the second half, and last week they went against a stingy front seven in Philadelphia.
“If we get in the situations that we were in most of the time last year, then I think you’ll see the type running game that you might have come to expect from last year,” he said.
The Cowboys are tied for just 16th in the league in attempts, with just 56 on the year. But they’re also averaging just 3.4 yards per carry on those attempts, which is 27th in the league. Garrett didn’t elaborate quite as much as Jones, but he agreed that it needs improving.

This HAS to be the game the run game gets going. I we cant get it going against the Giants, Philly, and Atlanta, then there isnt much hope for it the rest of the way. Unless Michaels comes off the bench and goes nuts.

Atlanta has a good run defense so far this year.

Seems to be improved I agree. But still, we would be running all over these teams if this was last year. I think the RB's have been some of the issue, but I cant help feeling that the run blocking has not been as good. I dont see the big holes that we had last year. The pass blocking has been incredible, however. I cant help thinking that they focused more on the pass protection in the off season so maybe it is taking them time to get going?

We didn't run all over Philly last year. In fact, the numbers from both games last year are almost identical to this years results.

People are discounting how good the Eagles and Giants defense are at run defense which is a big mistake. I think we'll see the offense open up against the severely weaker defenses coming up on the schedule.

Atlanta will stack the box against us, but our oline should dominate their defensive front. We will, however, have lots of opportunities in the passing game if we can take advantage of them. I doubt they fear our passing game without Romo and Dez and with Witten hobbled. We need to make them pay. I see lots of passes to running backs and tight ends.

It's just been schemes and injuries and rust.

Just look at the preseason, the lack of cohesion, Free's surgery, Martin's injury, and now Leary's injury. They are just not 100% yet, and Martin may be affected more than the team would want to reveal. They certainly have not appeared to be successful strong right, by choice.

The physicality of pass blocking may also be preferable over that required for run blocking, considering any injury limitations.

We and the opposition are not going to be privy to all of the details of game day strategy and tactics.

I shudder to think what the results will be if the run game does not get rolling with Weeden under center.

Well it may not be all that bad if there is still 8 in the box because Weeden will have easier coverages to throw into.

Eagles and Giants loaded up on the run. They still lost time of possession and the game.

We need to focus on not turning the ball over and keeping time of possession heavily in our favor. That's our recipe for winning.

I don't Dallas faced good run stopping teams last year Murray had over 100 vs the seahawks both games vs NYG over 100 yards and even with Romo out vs Arz he had 79 yards on 19 carries.
I'm not ruing the loss of Murray but you bet right now I'm not thilled with the running game and expect more from our plug and play RB. After all I have been told it is an easy position anyone can do it. yet right now none of the RB are even 4.0 a carry. Dallas needs to get this figured out and get this run game moving.

These are feelings of the National media regurgitated.

We need to threaten with the deep pass more and we really haven't. In fact, the only real deep pass I can remember is the one pass to Dunbar against the Eagles. It would be nice if we could have broke some of the quick hitters that Beasley and Dez had. That gets teams out of blitzing really quick. But for now unless we start threatening deep teams are going to blitz Weeden and it's going to contain the running game. So I just hope that we stick with the run enough to keep the defense honest, maybe get 3.5 ypc in the first half or so and not be overly conservative and get things to open up a bit in the 2nd half. And I still like Dunbar and McFadden out wide on linebackers in the receiving game.

It's only been 2 games. Give it time before reaching a conclusion.

I understand that is why I continue to say I hope. We do know last year 8 games in a row of over 100 yards and a 5.7 yards per carry out of Murray during that span.

There's nothing special about the defenses in Atlanta, New Orleans, New England, or Giants. Weeden should be able to move this offense well enough for the next four games.

The defense needs to focus on holding teams to under 20, and the offense needs to focus on trying to score 21 a game and protect the ball.
