We need to win,” Jones said last week after a training-camp practice. “We need to continue to build this foundation we have right now. The No. 1 thing from this point forward is to win a Super Bowl. We can’t rest on our laurels as a team. I sure can’t rest on any laurels in my position. When I look at opportunities ahead for the future, I see a brighter future ahead for the team as well as the NFL. I see more opportunities than I did 29 years ago. I want to be a part of it. I’m going to be very active.”
Blimey!
So all this time he was not determined to win a fourth?
Sir Jerry had me duped. That rogue!
Or maybe it was the apple cider?

Patriots have never been aggressive players in free agency until recently. The Packers are selective but still they aren't aggressive. The Steelers pretty much treat free agency like we do. Target players you can get below market value for and focus on retaining your own guys/the draft.

Free Agency stinks. Look at the players that were available last season. We need a pass rush right? Nick Perry has one season over 4 sacks and just got 60 million dollars...do you want to get in on that? I sure don't. If Demarcus Lawrence finishing this season with 6 or more sacks I have no doubt he wouldn't command that much on the open market.

We didn't have a lot of cap room last year. We should be okay next off-season.

Yes, I would have signed Perry. He is a better pass rusher than anyone we have.

There should be some decent upgrades available during free agency next off-season; Aaron Lynch (49ers), Kony Ealy (Patriots), Eric Reid (49ers), and Kenny Vacarro (Saints) are all guys I think could help us. We liked Ealy and Vacarro the years they were drafted.

Obviously, if the prices get too high it changes the conversation. Sitting out free agency should not be a strategy, it is literally "not trying."
Aggressive but smart free agency should be the strategy. Personally, I think this is the one place Jerry Jones is an amazing asset. Like a college recruiter, he should be walking these free agents around the Star and the stadium, wining and dining them along with a Dak, Zeke, Michael Irvin, etc., and selling these guys on coming to Dallas.

We will see who makes it to free agency. Typically the list looks a lot better this time of the year.

As for Perry? I don't know. Demarcus Lawrence and Perry both played in 32 games their first 3 years and had 9 sacks total...only thing that separate the two is that Perry excelled in a contract year.

I'm all for targeting players that fit your system and signing them to reasonable deals...I don't want to be a team that is paying players well over their worth just to fill holes with players that are marginally better than what we already have.

It's a shame he wasn't this "determined", when Romo was crippling himself trying to carry this franchise on his broken back for damn near 10 years.
