Jerry Jones: We've been thinking about drafting our QB of the future, and almost did in 2014

"Well, two years ago the same dynamic was there," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan's Shan and RJ show [KRLD-FM]. "What happens in the future when and if we don't have [Tony] Romo? I'll be very candid with you, certainly a backup to Romo, we still probably would have had a veteran in the mix at some point two years ago.

"But there's no doubt, when a top player on your board, and he certainly was there in our top five or six players, when he drops down there and you're drafting in the twenties or some place in that range, and you're in our situation, you have to look at our quarterback league, because that's how [Ben] Roethlisberger happens, that's how they get down there. [Brandon] Weeden was, of course, Cleveland's move like that, and it didn't pan out.

"And that's the other thing I've got to mention, just because they're drafted in the first round doesn't mean they pan out. I think they got a better chance to pan out, but not necessarily do they pan out.

"So, yeah, we've been thinking about it, and thinking about when the time to, the confluence of the opportunity in the draft as well as the right player comes along. As you know, I was a committee of one that year [2014] that was thinking that we could make it -- I don't want to even go into names. I don't want to get involved in that.

Jerry, we get it. You love you some Johnny Football.

Just draft Paxton Lynch or Jared Goff this year and we will be set for the next several years. Transition from Romo to Lynch/Goff with a great offensive line to protect him.

Now, about the defense...

I want to respond but I'm having a hard time interpreting Jerry speak.

Trying to connect the dots. Lusting for a higher pick. Usually higher QB draft and higher success rate. Ben Roethbesberger reference. Kicking himself for not drafting a QB 2 years ago. Going out on a limb I think somebody in the organization has their eye on Lynch. A lot of Roethlesberger similarities.

This could be interpreted as if the guy we wanted in 2014 became available we could do it.

It also could be interpreted as trading back into the first if there were someone there. I don't think he has the guts to pick one with the first choice. There will be too many voices in his ear over that and not one of them will be concerned about the future of the franchise, just keeping their jobs in the immediate future.

This does not make perfect sense to you? Get out your decoder ring.

"The bottom line is, we should've been thinking - that's my job really, if it's anybody's job. I've got to be looking ahead like that, really ahead like that. So I'd say not having a young, on the come, very talented, obvious quarterback that could be coming in and getting snaps and possibly winning ballgames, that's on me because we passed on it two years ago

This is so true but he specifically mentions the one from 2014 and says he was top 5 on their board. I have to believe that if the opportunity shows itself he would go for it. Especially since it would mean no need to use a premium pick.

Jerry always is chirpy but more chirpy when the team is awful.

I'm not sure why. Maybe he's drinking more. But I swear when the stink he talks alot...

I think in this case it is him saying, "see I was right." I wanted to draft the QB and the rest said no. But then again he could be talking about oil wells or something. He is a bit of a rambler.

Translation: I wanted Manziel two years ago to take over for Romo eventually. Manziel would've become a veteran capable of taking over for Romo when he got hurt.

Translation: The rest of my gang and I have been talking about Romo's successor a lot. I thought the opportunity of finding Romo's successor and Manziel's availability was a match in 2014. There were others discussing which player would be the best choice and suggesting alternatives other than Manziel but I'm not willing to start a media controversy at this time by divulging their names.

Translation: It's our responsibility to formulate the best solution to this problem. In fact, that's my main responsibility as general manager. My job requires the necessary foresight in discovering future roster solutions right now. I saw Manziel as the quarterback solution two years ago and did not draft him.

Its difficult at times....and can be interpreted many , many different ways..............

Hey..

The season isn't over and there is a lot to consider in a decision like this.

And since we don't know all the factors..

Jerrah should be vague.

Why would he indicated who he might like and where in the draft.?

Seriously..other teams would just use that to our disadvantage.

Let it be.

Nothing to be done right now.

It takes time understanding what Jerry says. Even so, I get headaches sometimes breaking down his vernacular.

Thank you Jerry.I think this means he won't repeat what he did with Manziel, he won't pass on a QB if he is high on our board.one of the top 3 QBs is fine with me.
