Jerry Jones worried it might be too late to save Cowboys' season

If we're out of it when Romo comes back I'd shut him down for the year. Play the backup, go for a better draft pick and get Romo ready for his last full season or two

The loss to the Saints indicates the kind of trouble the Cowboys are in because that was a very winnable game vs a bad team that had an ailing QB. In 5 games the Cowboys are the only team the Saints have beaten

Even reading a quote from him makes me violently angry.

An historic example of Jerry's NFL analytical skills:

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/cowboys/2006-10-26-owens-qb-change_x.htm

Jones hinted Tuesday he wanted to stick with the veteran. He explained Thursday that he actually was clinging to his preseason belief that Bledsoe would lead Dallas to the playoffs.

"I'm disappointed at the reason we're having to make this change," Jones said.

The QB switch has forced Jones to lower his expectations for this season. He's no longer convinced this team could be "special," the code word he and Parcells used this summer instead of saying they expected a deep playoff run.

"I have to be a realist," Jones said. "I hadn't thought or hoped that we'd be sitting here after the sixth game making these adjustments. ... I did not want to this year go to an inexperienced quarterback. I wanted to have the benefit of
Drew Bledsoe. It hasn't worked out as of today. It just hasn't worked out. That to me is a step back."

Real GM's don't share their thoughts with the media. When Jerry speaks, he is selling.

Jerry is another one that didn't get the memo. Hey Jerry, we're playing with a back-up QB. We're not supposed to win. You obviously know nothing about football...or at least that's what some folks here think.

Tell that to the Steelers, they didn't have Ben and still managed to beat a very decent SD team

Jerry's not the only one worried about saving the season -- that's for certain. It's pretty obvious we're on a life support system right now and Matt Cassel constitutes a big part of it. We've got a couple of weeks to correct our deficiencies. If that falls short of expectations, the remainder of the season could well be less than pleasant. It's surely not hopeless by any means but a somewhat dramatic turnaround would appear to be the order of the day. Here's hoping it materializes. Let's not kid ourselves -- a sense of urgency is undoubtedly called for. God help us.

Funny, I see teams all around the league winning with backup QBs. The freaking Colts are 2-0 with Luck watching from the sideline.

Haven't we lost like our last 50 games against backup QBs?

Knowing he'd be without Dez Bryant and Tony Romo for an extended period of time, Jerry Jones projected in his mind how many wins the Cowboys would need until those two stars returned.

According to the Cowboys owner and general manager, they're currently one victory behind where he was hoping entering the bye week.

Jones shared his thought process Tuesday morning.

"Kind of with your fingers crossed, I had hoped that we could compete against Atlanta, and we did," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan's Shan and RJ show [KRLD-FM]. "We were very disappointed that we tailed-off near the end, but the way Atlanta is playing, we can see that we were up against some pretty good competition. The New Orleans game is and was a downer. It was an opportunity. We didn't get that one. That one, in my mind, needed to be there. Let's mark that up to real expectation and lost opportunity.

Dang it Jerry....just shut the hell up with your 3rd grade view of football. What would NE do without Brady? GB without Rodgers? NY without Eli? Weeden has a 100 QBR. We're playing great. Look at the all-22 for goodness sake.

Well when Brady went down several years ago, Matt cassel stepped up and won some games for them. When Rodgers went down, I think Matt Flynn stepped up and won a couple of games for them. I really don't know who Eli's backup is, but I'm gonna follow the trend and say he would probably win a couple of games for them. I think when RG3 got hurt, McCoy came in and beat us. Last year, Austin stepped in for an injured Bradford and Did a pretty good job.

Welp, thats a kick in the head. Jerry usually optimistic. I fully agree with him though, they had to have that NO game. That will come back to haunt them.

Well he wasn't very optimistic prior to the 2014 season either.

It will take a few more weeks, but the season is over. Giants have major revenge game

The Giants have a major revenge game against us for the 5th game in a row come October 25th.

Isn't overall record more important than division record?

Well, one year we went 8-0 vs. the division and 0-8 vs. the rest of the league, and still managed to make the playoffs somehow. Then again, half the season was division games back then, so if you won all your division games in a 5 team division there was a decent chance of making the playoffs if you could win even just 1 or 2 non-division games.

Anyway, sure, obviously overall record is more important, but individually the division games are arguably more important than non-division games -- a 9-7 overall record with a 5-1 division record is a lot more desirable than 9-7 with a 2-3 division record in regards to tiebreakers. But I don't think anyone is arguing that of course. Just kinda rambling on now... :)

I want to agree with this from a future health preservation standpoint, but I can't see Romo not being out there on the field competing at the very first chance that he gets. Regardless of whether the season is officially lost or not. You can't keep a true competitor off the field if he can help it.

Agreed, those who thought that that wasn't a crucial game to win or that suggested that NO was at all a tough opponent, don't really understand the game.

The only minor positive about losing that game, is that along with the inevitable loss to NE, it probably sealed Weeden's fate and gave us a small but fighting chance with Cassel earlier than later. Every game with Weeden was going to be a loss. He's far too easy to defend, even for bad defenses.

Yeah. The NO game is the one we'll be looking back on late in the season.

Gonna have to start winning games like right now before the record goes south. 2-2 at least over the next 4 is a must. 4-5 is ok.
Then I believe Romo is eligible to return the following week.

The Giants certainly are a beatable team. The Seahawks, their defense is just too tough for a backup QB to compete. But Eagles, Giants, and Tampa are games we can win.

Defense yes, but the last 2 games, the way the Lions and Bengals harassed Wilson, their Offense can be kept in check. Get to Wilson, and contain him, our D if playing the way we hope they can. Will get sacks and create turnovers, or hope they create them. Being at home, and Dez back to help the O, then this game seems more winnable. Not saying they will, but it can be.
Contain Wilson, stop Lynch, which is a tall order. But Seattle had to give up on a few OL to keep other players. It is doable.

You hired a gutless coach Jerry and you are getting gutless results because of it.

Romo has masked all of your other mistakes and when he is gone we can't even run a offense that is suitable for the 1970's.
