-One reason we made the Roy Wi11iams trade was to stay out of the first round. We were concerned with this draft, especially at the bottom of the first - where we expected to be. We called our scouts, and looked ahead and felt this was not the year to sign a guy that may have signing issues.

Thanks for the scribe!

Even if this year's 1st round turns out to be lean, I call BS on this retro-justification. Jerry wanted Williams last year when he thought that we'd go to the show despite the fact that we had a non-coach and couldn't wait to try get him in the open market in 09. Jerry's after the fact rationale for his moves are always questionable IMO. Roy has been on the injury report almost every other week since he's been a pro - huge gamble for 3 quality picks.

I like sonny's comments though, he is really impressive. "putting pressure on complacent vets" is a keeper. :)

looks like Jerry is targeting an OL in the 2nd round. I think our man in Duke Robinson. Jerry was talking about how you can find great players high on your board still available in the 2nd round, then he used Flozell and Gurode as the only examples. Duke Robinson in the 2nd and Darcel McBeth in the 3rd.
Those two are the only 2nd round picks on the team other than Bennett. I don't think that had anything to do with position.

Or perhaps P Loadholt, or E Wood, or Unger.

I think along with D Robinson, those are probably the guys who could be available when we pick.

Did anyone else catch some of the beginning about a Dallas Cowboys channel or something like that? The radio guy mentioned the HD radio and then something about 24hr Cowboys or something like that.

Says he likes the way Wade Phillips runs (?) and says they plan to stick to that for a long time.

If someone caught what he was talking about.

Jerry was given a portrait done by an artist to celebrate a business relationship. From his reaction it's a picture of himself? He called it a masterpiece. But on the radio, couldn't really tell what it was.

Presser over.

me too, i think they will go after duke robinson or maybe someone like the centers mack or wood, the cowboys looked at wood, and loadholt very strongly in the draft, heck, if you noticed, jerry even said, that say 6 to 7 players may still be there when their turn comes up to draft, they may trade down 3-5 spots and still get a good player, while getting possibly another draft pick in the 4th round;

I have no doubt that Jerry is telling the truth about looking at what would be available at the bottom of the first round when we made the trade.

Jerry Jones didn't get rich by accident. Is he afraid of taking risks, absolutely NOT. He made his money taking risks. But he doesn't just take risks without checking looking at it from all angles first. Was he willing to give more than fair market value for Roy Williams because he wanted him, and thought he could help the team. That wouldn't surprise me at all. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if Jerry knew he was slightly over paying for Roy Williams, because he liked him and liked his potential. But, make no mistake about it, you can rest assured that he definately didn't just willy nilly agree to a 1st and 3rd round choice for Roy Williams without not projecting who would be available in the draft next year, at the end of round 1.

And a few other things. Number 1, you are crazy if you think that the Lions would have let Roy Williams walk in free agency this year, they no doubt would have put the franchise tag on him, and at worst gotten a draft pick in a trade, or maybe the new staff wouldn't have let him go at all.

And lastly, we gave up only 2 quality draft picks. Swapping our #6 for Detroit's #7 is NOT giving up a quality draft pick.

With that being said that's pretty sad we only have two 2nd rounders starting on this team that we actually drafted..

To me, that would be ideal.

If there are still a few players you want at 51, trade down and get an extra 4th rounder.

You can use that extra 4th to move up in the 3rd or to the bottom of the 2nd and get yet another good player.

I'll just add, that I'm really liking P Loadholt more and more in this draft.

He can play RT as well as OG for us. And he's got the size that fits the Cowboys' scheme.

-Finding young players in college that are late round pick or college free agents bring us a lot of flexibility in the salary cap. It also brings in young hungry guys to battle with more complacent members of our roster in positions we are looking to upgrade.

Jerry said you "cant have an offensive line made up of the most expensive free agents. Especially when you pay high money for other players on the team like WR.... How do you fix that? You have to take a draft like this and with your 2nd 3rd or 4th draft a guy who will take Flozell's place or Columbo's place."

I hope this feeling rings true.

And I would most definitely put Gurode's name in the conversation.

Too many highly-compensated, complacent fat-cats getting by because they've got no competition for their jobs.

I would dedicate the better part of this draft toward repairing/rebuilding this team's offensive line.

You not only start building for the future, but you would push the guys you currently have as well.

Sure he looked at it. Sure he looked at many things, but the implication that it wasn't a got to have him this season move more than anything else is wrong IMO.

Please, I understand the oil + gas business, this isn't it. Jerry has made a lot of other impetuous moves since he's been playing GM. Again, I'm sure that he looked at this year's draft, but I think that his short-term needs and impatience were larger factors. The injured Roy Williams would have put up crap #'s last year and would have come at a price that might have justified his risky health profile if we picked him up this year. Much better risk/reward pricing.

NEVER rule out ANY sort of trade when Jerry Jones is involved, although a trade DOWN is always more likely with Jerry Jones.

The last few years especially, you can see that the Cowboys really stick to their draft board. If when it starts getting closer to Dallas's turn (around #40-45, if there is one guy who really stands out on their draft board with being graded so much higher than anyone else. It would almost surely have to be a guy that they had a 1st round grade on) Dallas will not be afraid to trade up to get him. However, if there is no obvious guy sticking out when that time comes around and there is not one guy that sticks out as being graded definately higher than anyone else on their draft board when #51 roles around Jerry will be quick to drop back some in the draft and get extra draft picks.

All of this Duke Robinson talk is making my stomach hurt.

I would recommend everyone go over to the Draft Zone board and read what some of the scouts said about him.

Amazing how we keep adding rationalizations after the fact. Now it is about finances.

If you had been paying attention from the begining, you'd know he said this, exact, same thing last year when he made the trade.

They've been thinking about getting out of the 1st round because of the weakness of the draft, the fact they don't know how the next CBA structure is going to be, and the reluctant to pay a 1st round salary to a player who's not graded as a 1st rounder.

well i like him Chief;
I think he will be a monster in 2 years, also he will be ticked off for teams passing on him early; The next 2 offensive guards that i like are vasquez and roger allen.

Duke Robinson
G, Oklahoma
DUKE ROBINSON MEASURABLES
Height: 6-5 Weight: 330
40-yard dash: 5.32 10-yard dash: 1.78
20-yard shuttle: 5.00 60-yard shuttle:
Broad jump: 8-3 225-lb. bench: 20
3-cone drill: Vertical jump: 31
Wonderlic: 20-yard dash: 3.06

War Room analysis
Run blocking: Is an aggressive in-line run blocker who gets after the defender quickly, makes contact with a hard blow, keeps his feet moving and has the strength to ride the defender out of the play. At times lets the defender get inside to disrupt running plays. Gets through the line of scrimmage quickly when uncovered and can make seal block on the linebacker easily. Struggles when he has to try and adjust quickly to block a moving target who is not on his track. Grade: 7.5

Pass blocking: Has the playing strength to tie up the defender and keep him pinned on the line of scrimmage. Fails to consistently get his hands up and punch the defender, which causes him to be driven backwards at times. Slide wells side to side in pass pro to handle quick pass rush moves. Is often a step late reacting to stunts, allowing the defender to shoot through the gap and pressure the quarterback. Grade: 7.5

Initial quickness: Gets out of his stance and set to block quickly. Needs to do a better job of staying focused on the snap to be consistently productive in the NFL. Grade: 7.5

Strength: Displays the aggressiveness to put the defender on his back. Has the size to be a dominant seal blocker. Is able to stop the defender in his tracks. Grade: 8.5

Mobility: Has the quickness to get to the second level fast when uncovered. Gets a little overaggressive at time, which leads to him whiffing and missing the block altogether. Needs to keep his knees bent and block with leverage on a more consistent level to play up to his talent. Grade: 7.5

Bottom line: Robinson has received a ton of national attention, and although he's not a superstar prospect, he should become a good NFL starter. For such a massive offensive lineman, he is a surprisingly good athlete and moves his feet well. He has the size and strength to be a dominant blocker, but must become more consistent and improve his technique to capitalize on his talent.

3. DUKE ROBINSON Oklahoma 6-5 330 5.34 2-3
Three-year starter at LG. "He is one of the few power guards in this draft," San Francisco personnel director Trent Baalke said. "He's coming off a year in which he was plagued by an ankle injury. His inconsistency on film, his inability to dominate on a consistent basis, is a concern. If he decides he wants to be a pro, then he's got a good chance to develop." Appears to tire and then takes downs off. Frequently overextends in protection. "He's not fat," one scout said. "He's a terrific athlete who had a great year as a junior. He's not real bright." Grew up in the toughest sections of Atlanta. Doesn't fit teams with a zone-blocking scheme. "He's completely overrated," another scout said. "They rotate him in and out of there. He's huge and has some athletic ability, but he's out of control. He doesn't move his feet. He falls on the ground all the time. He's lazy. He's a mess."
