What kinda GM would let that happen?
If true, would you really be surprised?

No because I think Jerry listens to his HC's and values what they think.
Like I said... Jerry recognizes that he needs to seriously start thinking about life after Romo, and Manziel would have been a heck of a start, and he recognizes that. If Garrett was really the one that stepped in and made the decision not to draft Manziel, and to instead draft Martin, then I'm about as happy as a fan can be right now. Jerry listening to his coaches, and actually doing what they want is a HUGE step in the right direction.Jerry Jones said:"We have in Romo what I consider to be the better quarterback," Jones said. "But there's also the future, there's also insurance if you don't have him. If anybody could have adjusted to Manziel's style, we could have because we're a lot like that with Romo."

I'd rather have Jerry listen to his scouts than his coaches come draft day.
Jerry is covering himself. If Manziel becomes a superstar Jones can say he really wanted him.
Plus there is always the chance that Manziel plays out his contract with the Browns and leaves.
After the team passed on the lightning-rod signal-caller in favor of offensive lineman Zack Martin, owner and general manager Jerry Jones went out of his way to insist that he "didn't spend a lot of time considering Manziel" withTony Romo under contract.
Jones, though, notably contradicted himself on Friday, saying that Manziel's tumble down the board made for a tough decision when Dallas went on the clock at No. 16 overall.
"Well, it was. Yes, it was," Jones told "Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly" on Friday. "First of all, I couldn't believe he had fallen there. And secondly, we had spent a lot of time, I'd spent a lot of time. He's the kind of player that can be that kind of difference-maker. There's no doubt in my mind that he'll be a successful player.

Sorry guys, this is one time Jerry did the right thing football-wise. Give me someone at least 6'3" tall that is more interested in spirals and footwork.
Well, not surprised that Jerry came out and publicly stated how he REALLY felt when their pick came up. We all know that Manziel would have been the typical Jerry move at that point. Appears he is now realizing that in a 3-4 years, which would be the time Johnny Football needs, he will need a ringmaster for his Big Top. Other than the obvious pick that Jimmy and he made of Aikman, he has been an utter failure in getting and developing an NFL QB. He is so lucky that Romo fell in his lap as an afterthought or he would still be stuck in the Quincy Carter/Stoerner/Wright/Hutchinson/Henson nightmare.
Don't get me wrong, i think Martin was a practical pick and anytime you try to develope a dominating OL, you can't fault that. You need one of those regardless who the QB is. But getting a dominating lineman comes around EVERY year, franchise QBs do not or if they do, are one of the top 3 picks taken. The jury is out whether Manziel will be that franchise QB, but remember that Jerry evaluates his success not on NFL championships at this point, it is how many times the Cowboys are talked about in the media, the Cowboys gear purchased, the tickets sold, and the ratings. He has talked about that publicly---remember about that "we put on a great show" comment. And old Johnny Boy is turning out to be a human billboard. Selling jerseys, media attention. The Browns have never been talked about as much as this offseason and they seem to wilt and separate themselves from this publicity. To Jerry, this is a gold mine.
I could be wrong, but the conspiracy theorist in me thinks that Jerry is planting a seed into Johnny's mind that he actually would function in Dallas----that comment about being able to pattern their offense to Manziel's abilities. I do not believe that Manziel will renew his initial contract in Cleveland due to as they say "irreconciliable differences". He is too show man for bland Cleveland. And Johnny would love nothing better than taking over after Romo as QB of the Dallas Cowboys.
Of course he did. He knows that he's going to have to pull the trigger on a new QB soon.
That is an interesting theory...let him finish his rookie contract with the Browns, get a true free looksy of if he really is an NFL caliber QB and then, if he is, swoop him up in his prime alla Drew Brees. Jerry is a genius...ahem, when it comes to marketing.
seems like a can't miss prospect

Are we to assume that the Browns would be dumb enough to not resign Manziel if he were to play well his first 5 years?
With what was on the board. While i like the Martin pick because it further improves a young OL. But Manziel was the BPA by far. You develop Manziel for 2 possibly 3 yrs and you have a OL that is basically in the start of their prime. Tyron, Leary, Fred,Martin,Add young player here. And you basically make the switch seamlessly from Romo to Manziel. And then you still have 2 years on Manziels rookie deal.
I could see Dallas taking a QB this yr coming in round 1.
