Jerry, take notice

So sick of reading about the Eagles on this forum.

Sorry for the political post but...

The Eagles haven’t won a playoff game since George Bush was President!

And that streak will continue.

The Eagles are not a well constructed team for the future. They have Wentz but all of their other stars are essentially on their second contract.

This time last season, Cowboy fans were fantasizing about them Giants roster moves and look what happened to them.

Actually business geniuses often take themselves out of position when they realize that they're better off putting people who are better suited to run things in charge.

Small minded people think they can and should run everything. Similar to Jason Garrett not wanting anyone qualified on his offensive staff for years.

Everything you state here is true for a lot of successful people in all phases of business and life. But everything you stated here is also very contradictory to a narcissist.

Jerry is a textbook narcissist and I am resigned to the fact that nothing will change until he his physically unable to continue as the King of Cowboy Nation.

You mean hire a FULL TIME GM so Jerry would be losing the best PART TIME job in the country.

How many other NFL GMs get to schedule concerts, soccer games, WWF in there stadium? How many other NFL GMs represent their team at owner meetings? How many other NFL GMs run marketing, sales and publicity for their teams?

Well none, because it wouldn't allow them enough time to do their real job of managing all aspects of building the team.

If an average GM works 50 hours/week at their job, how many hours/week do you think JJ dedicates to GM responsibilities (vs. the other things he does as a businessman and owner) for the Cowboys? (Hint) Looks at the results of the last 20 years to get your answer.

Face it, 31 other teams have a GM that is dedicated to making their team better, the Cowboys have a spoiled rich billionaire that uses the GM role as a fun hobby.

Jerry is the GM in name only. McClay runs the draft, Stephen Jones runs the salary cap.

Regardless—-this is still a very talented, young football team...someone built that. We can whine about Garrett but GMs don’t always pick their own coaches.

Jerry Jones should come with a surgeon general's warning.
having Jerry Jones and control of your football team could lead to... stress, loss of hair and weight, high blood pressure, depression a sense of hopelessness, thoughts of suicide and liver failure due to excessive drinking.:(

It’s a Fantasy job we’re all supporting either directly or indirectly as frustrating as it is for us.

As much as I’ve criticized Jethro for the last 20 years I believe it’s not being totally fair not including his entire time here when evaluating his tenure. And why it’s been a love/hate relationship.

In 1989 I never believed he’d win 3 championships and probably screwed up winning 1 or 2 more but he should still recieve credit for winning those . Something only one other team has accomplished this era. It just all came so quickly we’d like to have spread them out possibly .

So, for whatever his agendas present in handicaps and obstacles to overcome now he accomplished more than I thought he would . And this comes from one of his biggest critics just keeping it real.

I think that he "won" those Super Bowls in spite of himself.

Let's face it, when he came in, he didn't know a thing about running a football team. And that was ultimately a good thing.

It meant that he listened to Jimmy and stayed out of the way. Only after a few years, when he got more "comfortable" (that hated word), did he begin to assert himself more. And the poor results followed.

Eventually, his influence was enough to drive a wedge between he and Johnson, leading to the split that inevitably cost this team one championship and possibly more.

And it's been that way for most of his tenure since, save for the Parcells era, and even then, he had to make some of his moves (TO).

Sadly, that one move with Parcells is my sole reason for hope at this point, that Jones might one day again realize that he needs to "take a step back in order for the team to move forward." In fact, I hear that exact quote in my head. Likely wishful thinking, but it's my biggest reason for optimism right now.

Where Jerry as GM hampers the franchise is not bringing in a more qualified and experienced coaching staff and let them coach.

And yes .. hiring a HC is the GM #1 responsibility .

Jerry said from Day 1 what his attentions were and has never waivered. It was tolerable when we’re winning.

I’m just not sure we anticipated he’d still be going at 75. My question is at what point does he hang it up? 80 .. 85.. or until he drops like Al Davis?
I hate to break this to you but he's going to out live us all.

@superonyx sums up the Jerry Jones perspective exactly.

It really is not that difficult. But before you do anything, step down, hire a real football General Manager, show a sense of purpose rather than narcissism. You are a great man, a rich man, a wildcatting river boat gambling man but, but you are as dense as a rock when it comes to football. Then after that bit of humble, do it for the team and the city and your fans all over the world, let the New General Manager, who OBTW is not to be named Stephen, follow the above template and bring glory back to Cowboys Nation.
Bold

Do it for the team? It is, literally, his team. He believes wholeheartedly that his actions are best for his team.

Do it for the city? He orchestrated the building of a new stadium in Arlington and not in Dallas. Arlington has more ‘influence’ over him than Dallas.

Do it for the fans? Jerry Jones is Jerry Jones’ biggest fan. Kinda hard to see the forest for the trees when a California Redwood is planted right smack between your ears.

You posted a link to a good article but it is not one that Jones would read, much less acknowledge. It is more realistic hypothesizing what Jerry Jones might accomplish within the scope of his own self-gratifying general managing framework.

The Cowboys are his toy. He will play with it in the manner that suits him. There's no more to it than that.

jimmy johson built the team that won 3 superbowls in four years if the last twenty years hasn't taught any one about jerry jones ability to be a competent gm then I don't know what it takes

Patrick Robinson sticks in my crawl. We had interest a couple of times in him as well but they chose to go after Carroll and sign him to a two year deal.

Actually it was two years ago that people fantasized about the Giants big FA period and it landed them in the playoffs (and beat us twice). Last year, the bottom fell out because of bad QB play and dope as a head coach.

Like a few, you overrate the talent on this team. If this team was as talented as you think, they'd be in the playoffs.

Unless you think Garrett is a boob and messed up this year, which is possible.

If you suggested these moves, fans would accuse you of playing Madden... It's an easy response that requires to effort to actually refute an argument.

Agree 100%. Anytime I suggest any trade I get the Madden response. The genius of Howie Roseman is that he played "Madden" in real life.

1. The Wentz trade (March/April 2016)

They first acquired the eighth overall pick from Miami in exchange for LB Kiko Alonso, Maxwell and the 13th overall pick in 2016. Now in striking distance, Roseman sent the No. 8 overall pick, a third- and fourth-rounder in '16, first-rounder in '17 and a second-rounder in '18 for the No. 2 overall pick and a fourth-rounder in '17 from the Cleveland Browns. Wentz has made them look really smart ever since.

2. The Bradford deal (September '16)

With their quarterback of the future in the fold, they traded Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings following the Teddy Bridgewater injury for a first-round pick in 2017 and a fourth-round pick in 2018. They used that first-rounder on DE Derek Barnett, who was a regular part of the defensive line rotation and finished the season with five sacks, 32 QB hits/pressures and nine tackles for loss.

Those are 3 Madden trades right there.

Here’s the real problem: the Cowboys already have a general manager; his name is Will McClay. Jerry has too much of an ego to give Will the title, because if/when the Cowboys attain the success they’re striving for, Jerry wants a big piece of the credit cake. We don’t know exactly the responsibilities that Will undertakes behind closed doors, but come on, it’s easy to see. He’s getting paid like a GM, has many of the same responsibilities, and so forth. He just doesn’t have the recognition or the “GM title.” Will Jerry swallow his pride, put his ego aside and rightfully name Will McClay the true general manager of the Cowboys? I doubt it.

No, he won’t . And I’d question if Will is assuming all of the GM responsibilities.

Will is more of Stephens assistant in player development and personnel like the Chief Scout.

Will isn’t involved in hiring coaches , signing contracts and pursuing players which is a core role of the GM.

Wills responsibility is more in finding the talent then influencing the decisions in personnel including the draft and why we’ve seen an influx of talent . He’s basically finding the bodies of Garretts vision and Jerry and Stephen are making the final decisions along with managing the Cap . Wills eye for talent and influence in these decisions have made a huge difference.

We are more likely to have a city on Mars before this ever happens.

Jerry Jones will turn 76yo this year, remains in robust health and isn’t gonna give up being an active GM until he no longer has the energy or desire to do the job.

The Cowboys continue to be at or near the top in home attendance, team merch sales and TV ratings — even in down seasons. They’re also considered to be one of the best away teams, as far as boosting opponents’ ticket sales, AND are ranked by Forbes as the #1 most valuable sports franchise (conservatively, @$4.4billion and rising) on the planet.

While I’d personally like to see someone else get a crack at the GM job, someone who has complete autonomy in building the team and hiring the coaching staff, unless any/all of the above-mentioned positives go seriously south, and as long as the team remains somewhat competitive, Jerry Jones, who already has 3 SB wins under his owner’s belt, is under no real compulsion to make any changes at the GM position now or in the near future.

:hammer:Been saying this for years. Man wears too many hats to be effective with the Cowboys.
