I love this idea of trading down. There aren't many players who we could take in Rd. 1 who would be guaranteed to come in as starters anyways so if we have to wait a year or two to actually see the player start then we may as well trade back and get an extra first next year. There are a couple of reasons why this would be favorable:
1. It would allow us to draft a CB and WR later this year, developmental type guys who could be #2 or #3 players at their position in a couple years. Then next year, if anything happens with Henry, Newman, Glenn or Owens then we have the ability to spend a first round pick on that position, even a first rounder at both positions if necessary.
2. If we decide to let Julius Jones walk, or if Romo fizzles out then we have the firepower needed to trade up for a guy like Darren McFadden or Brian Brohm.
We could still have a very good draft this year if we did that and get quality rotational guys like Tank Tyler or Lamaar Woodley. There's even a possibility, although small, that we could get a guy like Anthony Spencer if the trade down was early enough in the 2nd. If we traded down we could still trade back up from the 5th to the 4th since we have so many extra late round picks. I know you have to have a partner willing to trade and all that, but I don't think it's unreasonable to think we could move up for another 4th. Under this scenario we could have a draft like this:
2a. Tank Tyler DT
2b. Lamaar Woodley OLB
3. Allen Barbre OT
4a. Chris Davis WR or Laurent Robinson WR or Dallas Baker WR
4b. Courtney Brown CB or Usama Young CB
6. Joe Newton TE
7a. Jeff Rowe QB
7b. Le'ron McClain FB
To me a draft like that would make a lot of sense and go a long way towards filling some of our depth needs. Tyler and Woodley would make immediate impacts as rotational guys and Woodley could be that pressure guy needed opposite of Ware. Barbre would be depth at OT and give potential if we let Flozell walk, not to mention more leverage in contract negotiations. None of the WRs are really guys who have potential as a #1 but they have upside and could develop into #2 or #3 quality guys. The same goes with the CBs listed. Newton would push Tony Curtis for a spot in training camp and Jeff Rowe would be that next developmental type guy. McClain, if there, could be a big asset in the running game if he beats out Oliver Hoyte.
Then, as I said we're in position to make a huge splash in next years draft without having to sacrifice any real quality this year. If we traded down and made some smart selections then we could have a great deal.
