Jerry's not interested in starting Trey Lance

Wins shouldn't be that important to young players, what's important is that the players believe in the path forward, that their efforts are not wasted, that the team is getting better. Now it very well could be that playing Lance would depress everybody and cement the idea that he's not gonna be anything but let's freaking find out, eh?! Once you've established that fact you can pick someone else in the draft and the team can believe there is a sane person at the helm.

The Cowboys are competing to win games with Cooper Rush at the QB position.

I think although the Cowboys talent has degraded over the past few seasons; Jerry believes the current team can win games with a backup QB earning $2.5M a season.

I think Jerry is sending a message to Dak that he needs to play better ( in terms of competing and keeping the Cowboys in games)… instead of thinking the Cowboys need several upgrades for his performance to improve.
Lol. $60M per and you're sending a message?

The message was sent: "I'm an idiot for signing a declining choker to the league's biggest contract in history."

That's actually smart.

How many times in the past has a "developmental" QB been called into a duty before he was adequately prepared and ready?

Make no mistake, that is exactly what Lance is. The Cowboys are trying to "reset" his career and that is not easy. Typically, once you hit the field there is no going back

I remember guys like Chad Hutchinson who had no business being in the field when they threw him out there. Another was Drew Hensen.

Tony Romo was very fortunate not to throw a pass until his 4th season. He was actually inactive for every game his first season when he and Witten both came in at the same time

Trey Lance will get his opportunity. When he does, there will be no excuses.

If Jerry has a plan (and that's a massive IF), the only one I can think is that Jerry is trying lower Trey's value for next year by not playing him, and thus resigned him to a longer deal at a lower cost.

The team knows what they have in Lance. If he sucks, that's a sure fire way to tank the season and get a better draft pick. If Jerry thinks he could actually be a serviceable #2 or potentially a starter in a few years, playing him this year will only decrease the odds that he resigns with the team.

Again though, all this is based on the idea that we have an owner with a plan.
This is the only scenario that makes sense when you think about it.

Dont play Lance and let others get a peek at the guy since he is going to be a free agent in March. If nobody sees him, the odds he gets a big contract from another team is very low.

This is what Jerry is counting on, he can then sign Lance to a new contract but at backup money. So, they are "stashing" him away basically.

Like others have said however, this actually requires having a plan and the forethought on how to properly execute that plan, something that is very debatable right now with Jerry.

For Jerry to not even be desperate enough to prove he was right by trading the 4th rounder must mean Lance is an utter disaster at QB during practice.
Jerry is afraid of Trey having success. He's an ego maniac and wants to prove his signing of Dak was the right thing to do

The thinking may be to let him continue to sit and then his price will be way cheaper to re sign. If he were to light it up then there would be competition for his services.

While I doubt 15 teams won't be calling Lance, I would venture a few that need a QB that aren't picking high would put out a heavily incentive based contract.

Why would he consider staying here if at 5-8, with the season over, the owner/gm/HC is saying he wants to win games, therefore sticking with Rush.

Nothing smart is happening here from the ridiculous trade in the first place to the cap hit and complete waste of a roster spot for a 3rd string QB that will never see the field.

And to top it off, his contract is up. This entire situation was the epitome of stupid.

Jerry-speak.

Rush may give them the best chance to win but Lance has already started four games in the league and is 2-2, so this idea that Lance is incapable or is really bad in practice is just speculative IMO. Lance lost out to Purdy and Sam Darnold. Suddenly, the way the latter is playing this year, that doesn’t look so bad.

If you think a QB is green and has a lot of potential but he needs reps, you would think the rational thing to do in a lost season is to play him against the bad teams in the league, which makes this next game one that is optimal for it. But existing and future contract decisions may be impacting that choice.

Do those saying let’s get a higher draft pick know that the upcoming draft is the thought to be a weak one?

If this is all about a future contract it makes it even more comical.
