It was funny when it looked like the Jets kicker tried an onsides kick without letting his teamates in on it. It would have worked perfectly if they were looking for the ball and didn't just run into it.

Ridiculous.

A reverse isn't all that much of a trick play. Especially if the backside containers play exactly the way they are supposed to play every play. Instead, the skins over commit and the Jets decide to take advantage of it.

Is it really fair to the Jets that the Skins are throwing exotic blitzes and not allowing them to run because they are fully commiting to the run?

I don't think so.

Rich......

True...you see reverses all the time in the PS.

You also see blitzes.....but not the quantity or complexity that the Skins do.

If you don't have time to gameplan for a team that constantly blitzes, then you're not going to have a chance to be successful.

A trick play every now and then will loosen a blitzing team up some.

Good call.

I wonder what its going to be called when Randle El runs reverses this year. Of course it wont be a trick play.

(I agree with the above poster, theres really no such thing as a trick play besides the fake spike. Reverses, flea flickers, even play action, if you dont stay home your going to get burned)

Commanders fans have already reached the 4th stage of having a bad game:

1. Disbelief
2. Anger
3. Denial
4. The classic, "They'll suck anyway, so it's ok."

The yards per attempt by Jet QBs is about 5 yards so they are dinking and dunking. But the RB Blaylock has about a 4.6 yrds per carry average with over 10 rushes so you can't just dismiss that.
The 2 sacks by the skins were by DBs so whatever pressure they are getting is coming from the blitz.

The Jets are running counters and dives. Those are trick plays. ;)

Rich.......
thinks Skins fans would claim anything but a kneel down as a "trick play" or the "other team wanting to win this game more than we do."

Jets don't look all that particularly good, but are absolutely killing the Reds*ns in every aspect of the game.

By the way, is Mike Patrick doing the ESPN broadcasts this year? I hope not, he's absolutely horrible.

Commander comeback depends on their whipping boy, Todd Collins...

How ironic..

I checked the hailredskins sight and alot of them are talking about an injury to thier DT Cornelius Griffin, some say it looked bad, the others say what for the MRI so it sounded like it could be a big time injury to the guy. Anyone in the DC area that saw the game who could comment on that? His loss would hurt them bad in trying to stop our running game in week 2.

It's now early in the second quarter and they're losing 7-0 to what looks like a really bad Jets team playing with their backup quarterback. Their defense has been ok but not great and is depending on lots of crazy blitz schemes to get pressure on the Jets who are starting 2 rookie offensive linemen. DT Griffin got hurt, not sure how bad it is.

The offense has gotten nowhere. Obviously this is minus Portis, but this shows that if he isn't back to full strength soon they've got some serious issues.

Well, the game wound up 27-14, but it really wasn't that close... the Skins racked up a ton of passing yardage in the 4th quarter, when the Jets basically went to a prevent with their 3rd stringers... Todd Collins got fat off of that, but wound up throwing an int...

Some notes of concern for Skins fans:

Their quarterback of the future went 6 for 13 in this game, for 83 yards... no TDs, 1 int... a quarterback rating of 35.1, leaving his rating for the preseason at a robust 50.0-- 28 attempts, 17 completions, 182 yards, 0 TDs, 2 ints...

The Jets absolutely gashed the Skins' run defense, even without Curtis Martin... they gained 216 yards on 41 carries, and average of 5.2 yards per carry...

More injuries... the one to Quentin Griffin happened before I turned the game on, I don't know how bad it is... but the one to TE Robert Johnson looked pretty bad (it was an ankle injury, they took him off on a cart, but X-rays were negative, so it's not broken)...

I watched the first half of this game at home, but had to leave for work at halftime, so I tuned it in on the radio... the Skins' team of Sunny Jurgensen, Sam Huff and some new guy last year who replaced Frank Herzog, and whose name I've never bothered to learn... well, their call of the game was freakin' HYSTERICAL, I swear there were a coupla times where I almost had to pull the Jeep over, I was laughin' so hard...

Most comical was Huff, who was THIS close to havin' a nervous breakdown in the 4th quarter... he kept throwing out words like "humiliating", and "embarrassing", and one point grumpily observed "I'm not gonna get any sleep at all tonight"... on the final Skins drive, with about 4 minutes to go and the Skins threatening to get back in the game, he was openly rooting for them to run the clock out... ROTFLMAO...

I figure any Extremeskins homer who was listening to that radio call is now seriously reevaluating his belief that the Skins are legit Super Bowl contenders... in fact, if he takes that crew seriously at all, he's probably wondering if the Skins are gonna win a single game all year long...

Of course, this is preseason, and it doesn't really tell you a lot about how the Skins are gonna fare this season, if only because the starters got limited playing time (though Gibbs did have a number of starters in for virtually the entire first half)... further, it was predictable that the backups would struggle mightily in this game, since about a half dozen of them were only brought in over the course of the last 2-3 days... so all in all, it would be unwise to get TOO carried away with their preseason struggles...

But what we have seen quite clearly over these two preseason games is validation of the criticism I've been aiming at the Skins for some time now-- their depth is substandard, and if injuries force them to rely too heavily on that depth, it will be reflected in a disappointing record (perhaps even a sub-.500 record)...

I wonder if those mediots who have touted the Skins as favorites to win the NFC this year have reconsidered those opinions in light of the Skins' play the last two weeks?? :lmao2:

I went to ES to see what they were saying about the game.

Again, they had the audacity to gripe about a "trick" play (Brad Smith went 60 yards on a reverse), but fail to see that blitzing every down in the preseason is just as uncool.

Ahh, but if you're a Skins fan, it's OK to call corner blitzes in the first quarter of the first preseason game, but it's a breach of ethics for the opposition to make you PAY for that aggression with flea flickers and reverses and such...

Live by the blitz, die by the blitz... for Skins fans to whine about that is just hypocritical...

Because I'm not so blinded by my rose colored glasses to believe that a preseason game means anything.

Wins and losses don't mean anything, it's true, but if you know what to look for, preseason games tell you a lot about a team...

What these two preseason games have shown us about the Skins is their starters better stay REAL healthy, 'cause their backups blow chunks...

We've also seen Jason Campbell struggle mightily, the supposed quarterback of the future in DC...

I could go on, but you're getting the idea... more to the point, it seems the coaching staff has tumbled to the notion they have a serious depth problem, judging by the number of players brought in just this week (six)...

I guess at Gibbs informed the media that the injury to Griffin was only a minor "bump".
Preseason or not, they gave up major rushing yards, never a good thing. Especially given that they were blitzing as well. 216 yards rushing? No excuse for that, even if you take away that "trick" 61 yard reverse they had they still gave up 200 yards according to SilverBear's post.

It's stupid whining because opposing teams are trying to do some fundamental things in preseason, but Williams keeps blitzing and that doesn't allow for opposing teams to work some of their fundamental plays on offense quite like they would like to.

So what do you do? Throw in a rather simple play so maybe they'll quit blitzing just about every down.

And it's like I said, the reverse isn't all that big of a trick play. Especially if the backside containers play the play exactly like they should instead of over committing.

There's a reason why you don't see many trick plays against Dallas and most of the other teams in NFL.
