Wonder what this means for Cousins and Shanahan. Probably not gong to SF, now
Not necessarily. I believe Grop is a FA after the season so the Niners can se what they have and if they don't like it, they can either draft a qb or go get Cousins.

That makes me suspect it may not be such a great deal for the Niners after all. The Patriots know Garoppolo.
They were just unsuccessful in their attempts to re-sign him to an extension this past offseason is what I heard

True, Bigdog, he is. But I don't see the Niners trading that high a pick for a rental on a winless squad
I don't either that's why as I said in a previous post I hope they made this trade with having Grop signing a long term contract with them.

Wow great deal for the niners. IMO.

Surprising considering that Brady is so old. I thought the pats would want to keep jimmy for when Brady retires.

I’ve heard in a report before the season started that Brady intends to play two more seasons. Dude barely gets touched so honestly, he can play until his arm falls off.

IMO, Belicheck didn’t think Jimmy G was good enough to QB1 once Brady retired. Must’ve been a recent decision too, because I’m sure they’ve received better offers than just a second rounder in the past.

They probably don't think much of him like they didn't Brissett, Cassell and Mallett before him.
They were not as talented. If you had seen clips of him when Brady was out you would not be as dismissive.

You're saying that as a go on the outside looking in. He may be special. I'm just saying that offense has made guys look special before then they leave the system and are doomed.

It's hard for me to fathom them letting him go for a 2nd round pick when Brady is 40.

He would be better off in Denver or Jacksonville.

If he wants money and a shot at success, Jax doesn't look too bad anymore. A QB like Cousins could do very well there. ! great receiver, 1 good one in Hurns, and Fournette... Not a bad setup.

whatever you hear out of boston from this point on is going to be trying to slander jimmy g or make the new england belichiks look good in some way. in reality, the patriots somewhat botched this at the draft when jimmy had peak value, and he'd go to a team with a full training camp. an injury to brady and this trade never happens.

Hard for me to fathom, too, thus my search for a legitimate reason.

The simple answer is Jimmy G wanted to be a starter in 2018, and would not sign an extension with the Pats when his contract ended after this season.

They could franchise him, but the price would kill their salary cap, which they weren't going to do for a guy they hope WOULDN'T play.

This is pretty simple IMO.

That left a trade as the only option that got the Patriots something back in return.

They wanted to pay him starter money, he refused the contract. They weren't willing to pay their backup QB 100-150 million it's that simple. They must feel Brady has a few years left.

I later read the Pats did not feel they could sign him and after this year he was gone. Same difference, perhaps. The Pats were wise to get a deal before they had no leverage.

I'm surprised. I figured Garoppolo was Brady's heir apparent. IMO this will work well for the 49ers. They're not a good team now, but I think they're on the right track for becoming a lot better.
