This dude has received a ton of criticism (mostly justified) for his play.

But I'm not sure he gets enough credit for how well he has performed this year.

Sure, he still takes bad angles once in a while. And he will drop a potential INT.

But he is such an enforcer back there! Guys are looking over their shoulder, scared of the lumber that JJ is about to lay... and I love it! There's a visible difference in our play when he's in the game.

So, whatever the difference is, props to JJ Wilcox for the improvements he's made this season. It's fun to see.

Was thinking about starting a similar thread. Wilcox has certainly made an impact on the field this year. Yes, no one can take a worse angle of pursuit like he can at times, but the coaches have been able to mitigate opportunities for that happening by somewhat limiting his reps. I think he's best suited as a SS and is still developing as a player.

I actually like Wilcox. I've been patient with him. The guy hasn't been a defender for very long. People forget that. I think he could be a part of a very good defense. I don't think you have to replace him to accomplish that.

Absolutely RS...guy is an alpha dog and the rest of that D knows it. He was flat out intimidating Lions last night and McDonough acknowledged it on the broadcast. I'd like to keep him if possible the next couple seasons.

Gotta give some props to the new DB coach.....Wilcox, Heath, Jones, Brown etc.........have all progressed to solid contributor status.

Greg Jackson deserves every penny they are paying him. Eberflus is also worth his weight as the coverage coordinator.

They aren't perfect but guys help each other out and pass off in zone coverage. We have maintained our man skills. There is a more physical element to their tackling, and probably most impressive is that guys are filling in without a drop in the level of play. Scandrick, Mo, Brown, Wilcox, and Church have all missed games. Jones is the straw that stirs the proverbial drink with his ability to play all 5 spots. Heath and Brown have filled in admirably.

We've struggled to develop back 7 in year's past but heck now you keep giving these guys players and you could well see something special.

Great post Fuzzy...sure hope MO can come back in the first round although rust worries me a little even if he does.

I think a lot of the difference is him not being asked to play a deep zone and playing mostly with everything in front of him. If he can see it and just go hit it, he's effective. Actually having a real FS has probably helped him more than any other player on the defense. It's allowed him to play a style of safety that suits his play style much better.

I was impressed by the pick because I was not sure he had arms and hands based on his tackling. The guy NEVER wraps up!

Nice job by Wilcox though - I think he played well!

If you believe people close to the team this guy was one of, if not the last guy to make the team this year. Not sure what happened to turn the lights on but it's pretty amazing.

And which differences do you find? Who do you prefer?

I mean, Im glad we have both on our team.
Church's one strength throughout the years was his sure tackling. That's gone now. Wilcox isn't exactly a precision tackler, but he's an enforcer. He covers more ground than Church in the passing game, as well.

I love the fact that Wilcox is laying the wood and making receivers think about where he is. He is doing it the new NFL way too and not getting flagged. Still wonder on his coverage skills sometimes but night and day better.
