First, he was originally listed on the 53.
Second, they basically said they value winning now (Howell) over ceiling and development (Milton).
Lastly, he's still exposed on the practice squad. If someone wants him on their active roster, they can get him anyway.

So, if this was over $2million, I still say it's shortsighted. This is the kind of Pink Panther clever moves that results in high-fives but still mask a flawed overall approach.

Yes, occasionally a player will refuse but it doesn't make a ton of sense to do so. And I think each week the team can protect 4 of the players. So there are some limits. I was just clarifying that him being on the PS doesn't mean he is untouchable by other teams.

The truth though is he was available the moment the Cowboys released him.

Adding him to their PS is not much different than him joining another team's PS, but familiarity with players, coaches and the playbook can be more appealing than going to a new team and having to learn all of that again.

You never know how the season will play out though. He could end up QB2 at some point here or another team could lose their QB1 and/or QB2 and sign him to their active roster.

The Cowboys seem to have made their choice though so I won't blame him if he leaves.

Yes, but only if put on a team’s 53 man roster. He would’ve been claimed off waivers if a team was willing to do that. The only risk is if a team has injuries to both the starter and #2. Otherwise, it’s unlikely a team puts him the 53 man roster with zero time in the offense.

This now appears to be the case. Milton supposedly did look at offers from other teams (presumably practice squad spots) and decided to return to Dallas. That beats having to learn a whole new system with no better guarantees of making the roster as he would here.

This also tells me the teams that talked to Milton had settled QB rooms, or else he would have taken an opportunity to move up someone's depth chart. The Cowboys probably looked at the rosters of every team and made a calculated gamble Milton would slip through the cracks. They were correct.

Also, let's say a team does try to sign Milton off the PS. The Cowboys would be notified and can always give him a better offer and move him back to their own 53; if they want to. It's also up to Milton if he wants to go and sign elsewhere; since PS players are technically free agents.

It's not like any team can just pluck Milton off the squad and they own his rights. A contract has to be signed.

Milton still cannot read even the vanilla defenses of preseason. His athleticism allowed him to avoid a few sacks and make some plays. But that is not how the offense is supposed to run and is not sustainable. He also showed that he still can miss the easy throws and airmail over the middle throws. He looked good compared to last season when he was completely inept, but too much has been put into this team to put it in his hands if Dak goes down. Howell’s style is similar to Dak’s. He can read the defense, see the blitz, and pass from the pocket. He is the best choice to keep the offense in some level of consistency. I hope Milton continues to develop, but I wasn’t going to lose any sleep over someone else signing him. Fans here value him more than 31 other teams, including some carrying 3-4 QBs on their 53 currently. They could have dropped the worst QB on their roster to put Milton on as their third stringer, but no one did. I’m sure it was sobering for Milton, but it is what it is.

I guess I'm just a stupid fan but I really thought he looked good enough that someone would've picked him up. Maybe seeing Russell Wilson as a rookie in the preseason all those years ago and correctly predicting he would be the Seahawks' starting QB that season messed me up.

Funnily enough Wilson beat out Matt Flynn that year. Another guy who got a lot of hype after putting up a few good garbage-time performances.

But if true, that means the Cowboys refused. In that case, it's clear they wanted Milton back on the PS more than they wanted whatever teams were offering. My guess it was no better than a 7th round pick because they really gambled by floating him out there on the wire.

Opinion only….

Word was reported that a few teams inquired into Cowboys QB situation prior to releasing Joe. Some read into that that they were inquiring about trading for Joe. I don’t think so. It has been reported that several teams wanted to sign Sam in free agency, but he agreed with Dallas.

I believe the teams that inquired a couple days ago hoped we were keeping Joe and wanted to trade for Sam. Waiting to try and claim him was risky as he would likely be a better backup with his starting experience than what many currently have.

No one was interested in Milton when they knew the Cowboys were not dealing Howell. This is supported by the fact that all 31 could have claimed him as their backup or even third string QB at no cost, but they didn’t. It was also reported that Dallas didn’t reach back out to anyone when releasing Milton. Some argue that was dumb not to try and get a draft pick. I believe Dallas had no reason to reach out to the teams that contacted them about a QB because they already knew those teams wanted Sam, not Joe. This is also supported by Milton never being claimed.

The Cowboys released Joe Milton because they didn’t really view losing him as a loss, keeping Carson and Speed instead. I’m sure they are happy to have their PS QB be someone they already know and have worked with as opposed to a stranger, but other than that having him was clearly no priority.

That makes zero sense. And no one ever said teams inquired about Joe specifically, only that they checked on a QB. If another team was willing to give up anything to trade for Milton, 1) Dallas would have been stupid to waive him the next day instead of taking whatever was offered. 2) Why would any team offer anything for Milton but then fail to claim him the next day for free.

This scenario is 100 percent illogical.
