Joe Theismann: Any GM who trades for Tony Romo's 'damaged goods' should lose his job

What is different genius? It's the same team with a different QB and a better running back. That defense is worse. Dmac had fewer yards but that's cause he didn't start till later, and his QBs sucked, so they all loaded up on the run.

Your precious QB is done. He'll play somewhere else, but it won't be long before he's done.

Didn't start til later? You make it sound like the season is over. Elliott has already eclipsed McFadden on yards and has tripled his touchdown count. And the defense is considerably better.

they sure as sugar aren't releasing him and getting nothing........a first will be the price sooner or later

That all depends on Romo. If Rom goes to Jerry and say, "I want to play again, and I'd like to be released," I think Jerry - out of respect for Romo - will do it, if there's no trade partner.

And we have a precedence with Peyton Manning, so this isn't an unlikely scenario.

at worst they will restructure his deal and lower his cap hit by 9m and keep him....they will see if a QB gets hurt at anytime until the trading deadline

Let me ask you this question, and it's really open to anyone/everyone.
Do you think that the Cowboys will try to find a backup for Dak in the draft? I can't believe that even if Tony stays, he's going to be around for very long. I just can't see him languishing on the bench as a backup if he really believes he has one or two more years to give to the game. He's on a very short clock so he needs to make the most of his opportunities.

Denver or Dallas or retirement seems to be his only real options. It's rare for a franchise QB to accept a backup role behind the guy that replaced him because of pride and awkwardness,,, but boy could we use him and the fans would love him more for it (some of us anyways). It would probably be his best shot at being on a Super Bowl winning team albeit not as a full time starter and it would be a nice segue into coaching if he is entertaining that notion.

You're right about ego. I just don't think Tony's ego will allow him to remain a backup. I don't think anything is wrong with that. That's just how intensely competitive people are.
After giving it a bit more thought, I think Houston could make a play for Romo, assuming J.J. Watts continues to play. Really, Houston is a quarterback and a healthy Watts away from a Super Bowl run itself. Osweiler is stinking up the joint. I think Houston is in its last-hurrah phase with Watts' future questionable.
But we shall see.

Who knowns what McFad could have been had he had decent QBing and had he started all 16 games.

IND owed Peyton 28m on a roster bonus......Peyton negotiated that as his escape hatch or huge payday.... ..he was coming off neck fusion and they had the Andrew Luck in the bag so they released him....it was still a mistake......they should have worked out a sign and trade

DAL has Romo under contract for next year at a reasonable 14m but none of that is guaranteed......he is way too good to be a backup and way too valuable to release.....this isn't the Tony Romo Charity Team......it is the Dallas Cowboys...Tony has mad over 128m......he deserves no special treatment.....if he wants to keep playing at some point he will play against us and I bet you won't feel so charitable then

Finding a backup QB is a strange endeavor......if he is good enough to backup he has to be good enough to start for a few teams...it was argued that Dak was drafted to be groomed as Romo's backup for a few years

Signing a guy like Sanchez again is smart...unless Tony stays and that is 2m saved against Romo's salary......and then you draft a project at QB

With all due respect, I wouldn't be scared in the least if the Cowboys had to play a Romo-led team.

That isn't my point.......Cowboys fans are so quick to release Romo for his benefit of choosing a team but that means he is going to go to a team like DEN.......why would we hand him to them without compensation just to make Romo happy.....it is not about being scared......it is about throwing away compensation over nostalgia when Romo is someday going to try and beat us with everything he has

If he isn't going to retire then I don't want to help him at the expense of the Cowboys

Last year drove home the truth that if you want to compete in the playoffs, you'd better have a playoff worthy QB running your offense.

The Texans fought and clawed and scrapped their way into the playoffs with...Brian Hoyer. Their reward for that was to be absolutely embarrassed in the 1st round as they suffered one of the most lopsided playoff humiliations I've ever seen. 30-0 at the hands of the Chiefs.

Here's the QB's of the team that made the divisional round last year:

Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson and Carson Palmer in the NFC.

Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Alex Smith and Ben Rothlisberger in the AFC.

GM's who think they can ride a great defense with journeyman QB running their offense keep being disappointed. Since Tampa Bay and the Ravens pulled that off with Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer, every GM who can't land a franchise QB dreams of repeating that strategy. And it rarely works.

There ARE teams out there who's GM's are convinced they are missing just 1 single piece to make a run at the Super Bowl in 2017: a playoff caliber QB. Even if they drafted one next year, it'd take time to get him ready. Teams in 'win now' mode will give serious thought to the kind of trade being discussed in this thread.

I think Sanchez is a viable and possibly even top end backup. When you judge in the vacuum of backup QBs instead of starters he looks much more attractive. He is a guy that can operate your offense and give you a chance to win games in a pinch. Thats really all you can expect from a backup QB

As for finding a young QB in the draft. I say yes, but late enough to be a PS stash. I think Kellen Moore is a quality #3. Like Sanchez look at him in the vaccum of #3 QBs. Moore has starts under his belt where most havent even thrown a pass. However, you want to keep looking at low cost players at that position in the hopes of finding a developing a player that is capable of being a competent backup. 7th round pick, UDFA types

I guess maybe I misinterpreted this statement of yours:

Shrug.

It remains to be seen what Romo does or doesn't have left at this point, even though his physical makeup leaves room for doubt. I believe there's a team that would be willing to re-do his contract in 2017 as long as Jerry makes good for whatever else he'd have coming. He's definitely a risk that may or may not pay off, even if the price is right.

It's unimaginable that any team would consider taking on his present contract -- that's for sure. Romo wants to continue playing. Whether he's able to strike a deal with a team he prefers or not remains to be seen. It'll be a hot topic for next year, though -- that's for sure. Anyway, I wish him well.
