Last year drove home the truth that if you want to compete in the playoffs, you'd better have a playoff worthy QB running your offense.
The Texans fought and clawed and scrapped their way into the playoffs with...Brian Hoyer. Their reward for that was to be absolutely embarrassed in the 1st round as they suffered one of the most lopsided playoff humiliations I've ever seen. 30-0 at the hands of the Chiefs.
Here's the QB's of the team that made the divisional round last year:
Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson and Carson Palmer in the NFC.
Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Alex Smith and Ben Rothlisberger in the AFC.
GM's who think they can ride a great defense with journeyman QB running their offense keep being disappointed. Since Tampa Bay and the Ravens pulled that off with Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer, every GM who can't land a franchise QB dreams of repeating that strategy. And it rarely works.
There ARE teams out there who's GM's are convinced they are missing just 1 single piece to make a run at the Super Bowl in 2017: a playoff caliber QB. Even if they drafted one next year, it'd take time to get him ready. Teams in 'win now' mode will give serious thought to the kind of trade being discussed in this thread.
