Joe Theismann: Any GM who trades for Tony Romo's 'damaged goods' should lose his job

I think you're discounting age and Tony's health. I think a team would pick him up, but not with a first-round pick. I just don't see it.

And you see it clearly. The team might get something for him, but they won't get a 1st round pick.

If romo is willing to play for something like $10-$12 million base plus incentives I expect him to be the starter somewhere.

It would be quite a profitable year for him and his family as he'll also be collecting a massive check from Jerry. $30-34 million total could be headed his way, though I won't be entirely surprised if he takes the final Cowboys check and hangs it up.
You have no idea how contracts work.......DAL doesn't owe Romo another dollar............if he plays somewhere else that is all he will make.....

HIS CAP HIT IS NOT HIS SALARY......it is what we saved over the years on his previous cap hits.....but the money has already been paid

Joey T is a hater. He knows if Romo has any part here in Dallas or wins a SB with another team, next stop is somewhere he never gets in, unless he buys a ticket.
That my friends is the HOF.

Citing 'Iron Men' quarterbacks in an attempt to increase Romo's value does far more to damage a case than to make one.
hardly Ironmen.....they were all past 36 though and still very good

Once you reach Jedi Master level like Romo has the game is easy.......Romo was the best QB in the league in 2014......that knowledge doesn't disappear because he had a back injury ........he would be thriving in this offense and is still the better QB than Dak right now.......you just don't mess with a streak

Right, and theres no way to count him out either. Its a blanket statement and its moronic. Trade for what is the question. How much would a team be willing to gamble for a short term answer?

Edit: just to clarify, Im not calling your response moronic.

It's okay, you might be right.

Go back and watch video from recent years...when "healthy"
-Tony barely even walk normally in Thanksgiving games
-It's been widely reported that he doesn't sit during flights for fear his back will stiffen or spasm
-In a 2014 Commander game he was having a herniation that was causing numbness down his leg
-The injury in the preseason game with Seattle? Romo doesn't get hurt on that as a younger player.

Romo was maybe the best at the league in beating a free rusher coming at him. He can't move like that now.
And the other day on the radio, they were talking about Romo's stretching. They said he can hardly touch his knees, forget about touching his own feet.

They sure are. And some will actually believe what has happened rather than what they wish would happen.

Because despite "zero medical evidence", Romo has been injured and reinjured again and again.

And unlike some people, I can deal with that fact.

It's fact that Romo has had multiple injuries. It is not fact that any of his injuries have led to others.

That is not video. That is:

-an exaggeration.
-Hearsay of hearsay that I have not even heard of.
-a game where he had a rating of 95.
-speculation.

We can compare their games played and missed vs Romo's if you'd like, just say the word. My guess is that you didn't consider that fact when you brought the names up.

Once you reach Jedi Master level like Romo has the game is easy.......Romo was the best QB in the league in 2014......that knowledge doesn't disappear because he had a back injury ........he would be thriving in this offense and is still the better QB than Dak right now.......you just don't mess with a streak

He's the better 'passer' right now, but I couldn't care less. Prescott is winning, and unlike Romo, he's staying healthy.

And, while Romo was the "best QB in the league in 2014", he wasn't close to that level when he did play in 2015. And 2014 is almost two years ago. Two years ago, Peyton Manning was among the best too. Then he fell off a cliff. It happens to the best of them.

When Manning was obtained, he had some weird nerve damage in his neck. I agree about the others being bad comps but Manning had arguably a worse and more uncertain injury and is one of the teams in question currently.

People keep arguing against an ideal team but Denver likely would be interested given recent history.

I don't care what they've led to. Only that they've happened and that they continue to happen. And since it's not this team's problem anymore, I don't care what will happen. But any team thinking of signing him will definitely look at the track record of unavailability that far exceeds any other quarterback in the entire league.

As of 8/27:
"Romo has $19.6 million remaining of unamortized signing bonus. If he outright retires, that would accelerate onto the 2017 ledger, meaning the Cowboys would save $5.1 million of space on next year’s cap."

It's possible the money I was thinking of as guaranteed contract was really just residual amortized signing bonus. Doesn't make a lick of difference to the Cowboys cap, his tradeability, etc.

Manning missed that single season with the neck issue prior to last season. He was the epitome of 'Iron Man' for the rest of his career. None of their missed time is anywhere close to Romo's, but it's a fact that some fans can't admit.

People keep arguing against an ideal team but Denver likely would be interested given recent history.

They make a lot of sense as the most likely candidate on paper, but we'll have to wait and see if Elway actually agrees with us.

If I was an owner, I would not sign off on a deal for tony unless the Cowboys were paying his salary and throwing a first round pick to go with whatever trash I am sending the boys way. Hes old and broken and 1 hit away from retirement if that hit is right and with an inferior line, that hit could well be on the next play. In other words, I dont see a trade happening for Tony.

Denver would seemingly be a logical landing spot, but the Broncos could only bring Romo in if the money made sense.

And that's a challenge with their current cap. I suspect the Broncos would explore things but likely defer until Romo's free agency to see what kind of deal could be worked out.

If that's true I'm rooting for Romo to retire immediately, for his sake.

His neck injury was degenerate. Romo has no degenerate issues that I know of.

If everybody believed as you do, they'd be happy to trade picks to get him, but alas, NFL executives aren't cowboy fans. Sadly for us.

Tony had the best cast of players he's going to find, yet he was hurt in 4 of the last 5 games he appeared. How you guys get this "years left" stuff is beyond rational thought.
NFL teams make dumb decision every year.

At this time last year NObody would have believe that Sam Bradford would fetch a 1st. He has been oft injured and is not that good when healthy. At least Romo is good when he is on the field.

GMs often get desperate to win Now. If a GM thinks he is going to get fired without a winning season, then draft picks are not as important to him as they are to team that are on a long term plan.

If the Niner's GM gets another year, he could be one of those that is desperate for a QB.
