He's been released by the Dolphins. He has a tie with Jason Garrett so I would completely expect Dallas will be taking a look at him. Anyone like this option?

I would like him as Romo's backup. He has ties to garret and he did well while he played. I don't think he was given a full shot. He won a few games and then got yanked and replaced by lemon. He didn't do well in Detroit, NO ONE has or is doing well there. He would be a good backup, he's a talented qb who has never had a good team.

Don't be surprised if Philly or Carolina give him a long look.

I also seem to remember Jerry and the Cowboys expressing some interest in Harrington before he signed with Miami last year.

If Jason Garrett gives him a good endorsement, maybe they take a look?

How about Harrington as a backup?

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the Dolphins plan to release QB Joey Harrington if they can't sucker someone into trading for him this week.

Harrington might be a candidate to become Tony Romo's backup. It depends on how Jason Garrett feels about Harrington after working with him last season.

Yes, Harrington has been a huge bust after the Lions took him with the third overall pick in 2002. But he's not a Ryan Leaf-type loudmouth that would be disruptive in the locker room, and he'd give the Cowboys an experienced hand if Romo got hurt.

Please don't start a Jeff Garcia campaign. There's a better chance that Quincy Carter will start the Cowboys' season opener than a T.O.-Garcia reunion happening at Valley Ranch.

He's too inconsistent to be a back-up. He's more like a 3rd string quarterback. I like Jeff Mroz over him or Matt Baker... Joey Harrington look good for a couple of games and looked sorry for the rest of the season.

Harrington is pretty consistent man. I don't know what you're watching. Consistently not that great, but still.

Honestly I'm a bit surprised Miami is going to cut him, but whatever.

I doubt we go the Harrington route. It sounds jolly and all, since he's familiar with Garrett, but there is almost no benefit to having him here. He might be able to take over in a game, and manage it for three quarters or so, but there's no way you want him playing any longer than that.

It's not like he's got experience in the Garrett Sparano system we're going to be running. He played in Mike Mularkey's idiot offense last year, which was actually a pretty good fit for him, because there was almost no necessity placed on the QB to make reads. It was first read, second read, throw it away. It helped Miami's sack numbers drop substantially from Culpepper's near-record-setting pace, but ultimately cost them in close games, where Joey (like he ALWAYS does) threw an absolutely boneheaded pass once the pressure was placed on him to perform.

I can see it happening, because of Jerry's rep - but there is absolutely no upside to that move, and I would hope Jerry would avoid it.

What moderately priced backup is going to offer any more than this?

I don't believe we bother with Huard (nor him with us).

Anyone who signs here needs to understand that it is Tony Romo. Romo, Romo, Romo and more Romo. That would deter anyone who could conceiveably do more than manage a game.

Tim Rattay, Anthony Wright, both would probably come with cheaper price tags and are familiar with the backseat role they'd be playing in the Romo show.

Joey's a likable guy, and when you watch him, you admire his enthusiasm. But he is an awful QB. There's nothing he can offer from a backup role - ie talking on the sideline with the starter about what he's seeing - because I guarantee, if there's a weakness in the defense, Joey didn't see it. He did okay in Mularkey's offense to start, but once teams just sat on the outs and curls they were running in the elementary style, and Joey had to do something himself, it went to pot.

I like Rattay as well and he would be my selection. Wright, I am not sure about. I don't think he would jump at the opportunity to return to Dallas where he was never really given a chance to compete in his last stint.

At any rate, it is as I said. I don't believe you are going to find a backup who will do more than simply manage a game and do okay for a brief period of time.

I've thought that Volek would be a good pickup since last season. I really like Johnson as a backup, if he were available. I like Carr and I like Harrington as options. All have starting experience and all have won games in the NFL, which is the biggest asset in a backup for us, IMO. Lots of starting experience, which translates into "less reps needed" is very valuable for Romo's development IMO.

Was reading in the Chron the other day and unless something extreme happens, the Texans are sticking with Carr. Tho they are considering taking another QB in the draft.

Harrington and Volek would be solid choices. Tho, if it came down to an extended period, I'd like Harrington over Volek. Tho I'm not even sure Volek's available. He's in SF now, right?

Wright at one time had some potential, but now has shown that he's barely a backup.

Rattay and Huard would be good choices, as well.

Jake Plummer/Damon Huard/or Jeff Garcia

Those are three great backups esp the latter two IMO. I think all are dreaming of a starters role and I don't blame them. Not sure they would come but one of the three may take a chance Romo busts or goes down.

Not sure about Harrington. Just don't know how good he is. That's where Jason would have intimate knowledge. He's dreaming too but he has less right to dream esp compared to Huard and Garcia.
