Joey Porter to Sign with the Dolphins

Doesn't have to be a quantum leap, just an improvement in paying attention to assignments

Paying attention to assignments wasn't a problem under Coach Parcells.

If anything the players paid TOO much attention to assignments.

I would much rather we get burnt every now and then when RW is blitzing the QB, than I would watching RW flailing along 3 steps behind the WR on the way to the end zone.

That is debateable. We played it safe and still got picked apart.

Well I for one am glad he is going elsewhere...though I know most will not be

WPXI-Channel 11 is reporting this morning that former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter will sign today with the Miami Dolphins.
Porter will sign a multiyear deal for about $24 million, WPXI reports. He will get a signing bonus of about $12 million.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
:tantrum:

Oh well, I guess I can live with that. It would have been nice, though. I really wanted to see what Big Phill could do with a player like Porter to help take some of the pressure off of Ware, especially with Ellis coming off of injury and James/Burnett still question marks. I know Porter was injured too but we he hasn't shown any drop offs in ability plus he has the mean streak that this defense desperately needs.

  Exactly what I am saying, too safe. I want a little risk taking this year.

This sucks...

I was wanting some of that intensity on our Defense.

Instead I get Bradie James trying to do his "Shaq-**" when he makes a play, Roy being quite as usual, and the occasional emotional outburst from D-Ware. Even Fergy said being loud isn't his style.

I like all of them as players, they just choose to lead by example/actions rather than through their words. I'd have traded that 3rd rounder for Ray Lewis last year , just for the emotion alone.

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Porter is about finished anyway. How many times has Pittsburgh been wrong when letting their own LBs go as they get older?

Well I definately want to draft a DE/OLB with our first pick now, or at the very least target Lamar Woodley or Bryan Robinson in round 2.

That is a very good point.

Why not? We have spent our #1s (the years we had one)on Defensive players
for the last 15 years, except for the great talent, David LeFleur. Yeah, let's use this year's on a defensive player.

PORTER GETS PAID

He wanted more money in 2006. He eventually got cut.

But now he's getting paid.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that linebacker Joey Porter's contract with the Dolphins is worth $32.5 million over five years, with a whopping $20 million in guaranteed money.

The guaranteed money matches the amount received by linebacker Adalius Thomas with the Patriots.

The next question is whether Porter will be an exception to the rule that Steelers linebackers do much better in black and gold than they perform elsewhere. But even if he flames out, that $20 million will carry him a long way after his playing career ends.

Chad Brown averaged 7.1 sacks in the 6 seasons subsequent to his departure from the Steelers.

Kevin Greene averaged 13 sacks in the 4 seasons following his departure from PIT.

Then again, PIT always had someone younger, cheaper, and as capable ready to step into their shoes.

WOW 12 Million for a 30 yr. old LB with questionable knees?
Porter turns 30 in a couple of weeks, which makes him only a few months older than Adalius Thomas. Thought that was interesting.

I was hoping we could get Porter as well. This team lacks that "fire" and intensity on defense. He would have been that spark, similar to how Irvin and Haley were in the '90's. Currently, other than T. O. we have a bunch of nice guys. And we all know T.O.'s talk is ignored. But on defense, who's the fiery leader? I would love to see Ware be that guy, but it's not his personality. Porter would have brought that along with a winning attitude. Plus, the guy can still play.

The Steelers did let Mike Vrabel go to New England and he's done quite well.

But for the money he got, I can understand. Would have been a nice addition though.

HOW MUCH? are u kidding me they payed that for a 30 year old OLB. Hes got 2 years left tops, loses a step, never gets to the QB, gets burned by TE's then gets cut. Thanks but no thanks ill take my chances with ellis than draft another.

I really think the whole defense will have more "fire" with Parcells gone. It's hard to put a finger on it exactly, and I don't think Parcells meant to do it, but it's like everyone on D was so concerned with not acting better than they were that they kept a lid on their enthusiasm. I think that will change now as Wade sort of turns things over to his players and doesn't beat them down so much.

And I also wouldn't pay big bucks for Porter just for his attitude. That was part of the thinking on Rivera, and all we got was a platitude-spouting machine who was too broken down to play.

The ESPN site has a breaking news blurb that Joey Porter signed w/ the Dolphins for $32 mil...

Big money for a guy on the downside of his career.

Yeah, here is the article...

Porter to get $20M guaranteed in deal with Dolphins

By John Clayton

The Dolphins didn't want to wait for Joey Porter to make a five- to six-team tour of prospective new teams.

While Porter, the former Steelers outside linebacker, was spending Monday trying to map out his trips to selected NFL cities, the Dolphins came in with an offer he couldn't refuse. Porter agreed to a five-year, $32 million contract that includes $20 million in guarantees.

The Steelers released him a week ago because they didn't have plans to sign him after his contract ran out in 2007. With several key starters entering the final year of their contract, the Steelers had to be selective and Porter became a salary cap casualty.

The minute he became a free agent, his phone was ringing. Porter had enough offers to visit most of the teams that run a 3-4 defense and few, including Cincinnati, that run a 4-3. He chose to play for Dom Capers' 3-4 unit in Miami.

Porter wanted to take the weekend to settle himself and find a new spot. On Monday, he started to put together a plan of trips. Then the Dolphins entered the picture and worked out a contract. Knowing he was one of the top defensive players available, Porter accepted a deal from the Dolphins before making other visits.

the is no way hes going there he siad "i only interested into Dallas and Baltimore". No way come on we need him gosh.

I understand he wants to go to a team with potential but you never know, its not like he's talking about St Louis or Philadelphia. If I were a young, single millionaire, rolling up on South Beach doesn't sound bad compared to living wherever you want to pick in Dallas. Downtown? no. Near SMU is probably his best bet, but even that is pretty boring.

I would have liked to add him if anything for the fire he brings, our D is too soft, but maybe that changes with Roy coming back at the line and Ware cutting loose a little more.

Dolphins D just keeps getting better while the offense floats around in loserville...:lmao2:
