Madden was head and shoulders above the other color guys when he first started. He is still very good and he will be missed.

In my opinion, I think he got his job as a GM because of how good he is as a color commentator.

The worst thing about Millen is that IMO he purposely copied Madden's style when he started out, and it sounds fake. The last thing I want is a poor imitation of Madden now that the real one is gone.

I actually like Collinsworth, but I seem to be the only one.

Madden & Summerall were a great pairing. They got along well and didn't step all over each other in the booth. I have never been a fan of Al Michaels but he & John did a very good job on MNF. Madden will be missed, that's for sure.

I could see Matt Millen taking his place and would be OK with that.

Now for what mattered in this topic, Madden retiring, that bums me out. I always like the guy as an announcer. I'll miss his commentary on games and now my two favorites in broadcasting, Pat being the other, are gone.

Very sad day indeed. Sunday Night Football just lost a big part of it's draw, IMO.

If there was ever any player, coach or special contributer who was the perfect example of what a Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinee should be, it is John Madden. The Hall got a lot better after his induction. Television is losing an icon, but pro football...

...no, football itself, is that much better as a sport overall because of John Madden.

Now for the big question, will the EA game still be called Madden 2010?

Collinsworth 2010 just doesn't have the same ring to it.

They'll probably drop it eventually for just "NFL 20XX" doubt they do it this year though

think FOX is going to allow NBC to break up the Buck/Aikman team.

There is one guy out there who's a natural fit and alot of people in the biz thought he was a natural replacement for when Madded calls it in:

I absolutely agree. Matt Millen was my favorite broadcaster outside of maddens and summerall.

It sucks that madden is gone. Harry kalas's voice will never be heard over nfl shots and now madden and summerall are retired.

Anyone have a time machine? I would like to go back to the mid 80s again and be a kid being put in a trance by madden and summerall calling the 4 pm games on cbs.

oh well. With my luck deion and jaimie dukes will get the job.

A ton of the marketing appeal can be contributed to the trademark name. I highly doubt EA will take the chance of altering the name anytime soon.

Captain America always said he was struggling a lot and was close to this.

Sad. I know a lot of people didn't like him, but I think he and Michaels were the best on TV.

Without a doubt they were.

Unlike other duos out there, you got very little BS sensationalization about all things NOT related to football.

Collinsworth would be a better pick than Aikman or Buck. Millen?? Chris is more jovial and I think would fit Michaels better. Aikman and Buck are kinda dry.

I'm actually not shocked. Last year he missed a game for the first time and I think it was to get him ready for the changes. It would have to suck to travel by bus everywhere and since he doesn't fly the constant travel would wear anyone down.

Lots of people don't like the guy's broadcasting. I think he is the best color analyst ever and changed the way the game is reported.

The question now is, who replaces him? Troy Aikman did once before at Fox when he went to MNF. Could lightning strike twice?

I agree Hostile he changed how football comentary was done on TV maybe I am bias I did grow up watching Madden most my life but man did I learn things from him about formation and pulling etc.

I am glad he is going out in what looks to be good health
