NBC says it won't address questions about Madden's successor today. I can understand that. The network wants to give Madden his day in the sun.

But the successor will be Cris Collinsworth. You can book it,

Actually, I called it first... at least in this thread. Florio was first.;)

It's not official, but it's certainly likely..

Madden and Summerall were THE best combo ever and I doubt they will ever be beat. I am going to miss Madden. I almost don't even want to watch anymore with him gone. :(

Sad, Madden is my favorite. Sure, it was annoying when the talked over the play by play guy. Sometimes his digressions went on past the point of being clever.

Years ago, Madden called attention to line play when most fans were focused on the skill positions. Madden was one of the first/best to explain the game to viewers. I think he has contributed to football being the most popular sport in America by helping the average person undertand, and thus enjoy, the game more.

What?????? He's like a tradition!

some traditions must change. He was great, and there will be times we all will say...wish Madden was back.
Poor annuncer that replaces him, if not a big name. Because he will be compared to him for a while.
I just hope whoever it is, does his own thing, and not try to be like Madden.

That would be awkward.

When I get to rewatch those old 1990's Cowboys games, I still get into the Madden and Summerall play-by-play and analysis. They were an incredible tandem and it seemed they were at their peak when that Dallas Dynasty was at theirs.

You'll be missed Mr. Madden.

Legendary NFL broadcaster John Madden has made his last call.

NBC announced the former coach's plans to retire Thursday morning. Though he spent the last three years working NBC's Sunday night NFL game, he served as an analyst on all four major television networks since retiring as the Oakland Raiders coach in 1979.

"It's time," Madden said. "I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and their five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not."

Known to many for his annual "Madden NFL Football" video game, the 73-year-old Hall of Famer's final game was February's Super Bowl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals.

After beginning his coaching career as an Oakland linebacker coach in 1967, he was promoted to head coach two years later. At 33, he was the American Football League's youngest coach. He retired after winning the Super Bowl, and joined CBS the next season.

Famously afraid of flying on planes, he traveled to most games by a specially-equipped bus.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

I wouldn't be surprised if Michaels hangs it up soon, too. He's been at this forever.

I just hope they can put together a good team to do Sunday Night games and not make the mistake of ESPN putting 3 in the booth with one guy with no back ground in football
