The trio cracked the top 20 on the Cowboys board. Club officials say it was Gregory (No. 4), Collins (early teens) and Jones (No. 20).

How do you keep Gregory at #4 and then refuse to take him @ #27? DE is a need. It seems to me that if they decided they wouldn't use a 1st on him but would take him in the 2nd, then they should have moved him down to the group with early 2nd round grades.

Sometimes teams have a feel for where players will be taken. The Cowboys probably knew no one else would touch in him in the first two rounds. Fliers and reaches usually start happening in the 3rd.

Does this mean we actually had Jones as a 2nd? I know Broaddus likes to harp on how they usually only have about 16-18 1st round grades...

I do not think boards are fluid during the middle of the draft where you move them down on the spot. Also, I doubt teams hold to their board nearly as tightly as people expect or want. When you hear teams praising themselves for being true to the board, that tells you it varies from draft to draft, player to player. Boards are set prior to the draft and the degree that they stick to it is what is fluid, not the grade.

His 1st round grade was because of his talent. But sometimes you have to play it safe, because if we used our first rounder on Gregory and he ends up not putting down the weed then we wasted a first round pick. So they went with the safe Byron Jones. Once the 2nd round came around and Gregory was still there thats when its cool to gamble, because you already picked your safe 1st rounder.

Would it really matter? When you're picking at #27, so the odds of getting one of the top 18 players are very slim. Yet Dallas is walking away with two of the top 18, and three of the top 20.

Great article on getting 3 first round talents in one draft.

Maybe they got some reliable information that suggests he could be there with their next pick. Had they moved back and their information was wrong, then they missed out on Jones and Gregory.

I think he likely was at the top of their 2nd round grades. But he was apparently the last player in his tier as they would have looked to trade down had he not been there.

It was just a question. It hasn't been addressed like the TFred pick, so I was just wondering if they had 20+ 1st grades. It does kind of taint the whole 3 1st rounders though ;)

This was my reaction too. The only thing I can figure is that the board represents pure talent ranking, rather than (as I would think would make sense) desirability to the team all things considered. Reminds me of the Shariff Floyd thing, where he was ranked fifth on the board but passed on at 18.

The other thing that kind of got lost in all the Jones/Gregory hubbub is what happened at corner on Day 2. By the time you got to 60, all of the decent corners were gone. That's after the long wait from the last corner in the first. The first two rounds really fell their way. After Round 2 it was a different story in terms of luck, until they signed Collins and made up for the rest.

“Jerry Jones did a great job doing that deal,” Byron Jones said. “But at the end of the day we have to prove ourselves.

“Yeah, maybe we were measured as first-round guys but we’ve got to prove ourselves with a Cowboys uniform on.”

I love this guys attitude. He just seems to get it. He seemed super competitive out on the field at minicamp too.

“Everybody feels that way,” Gregory said. “I know La’el carries himself that way, Byron obviously does. I know I do.

“I think we expect a lot of big things from ourselves. But we can’t add any more pressure on ourselves. We have to be the same players we’ve always been but get better.”

I'm very surprised by Gregory in all honesty. Leading up to the draft I figured he was just a big dummy. I've now completely turned around on that line of thinking. He speaks so eloquently and sounds like an intelligent young man. Yes, he made some dumb decisions, but he seems like a smart kid with a decision making problem. I'll definitely be rooting for him for more than him being able to help my football team.

I must admit the first time I heard him talk, I was expecting a lot of street language, but he was very articulate.

I apologize if that offends anyone, but it was just surprising to me.

It appears Jones was exaggerating when he said Byron Jones was in the top 15 or 16 on their board. I'm surprised because we know that Jerry never exaggerates.

The Cowboys "board" has a different meaning than some draft boards. They rank based on talent and then put an asterisk next to character issue players with a lot of background research documented. The scouts want the decision makers to have the talent ranking and let the decision makers decide on the character issues and that type of thing at draft time.
