What Jerry says today about the coaching situation means squat. What matters is when the season is over.

What is Jerry going to say just days before an important game with a divisional rival? That Garrett is finished? That he hs to make the playoffs or he's done?

The focus needs to be on the Giants and nothing else. Garretts position as HC will be determined when the season ends.

The Wade situation should have taught him that he should say NOTHING.

Here´s the full answer, Jerry would never say, “yes, he needs to make the playoffs to keep his job”

It's not that (an Armageddon year) for Jason, and I'm disappointed that we don't have a better record,” Jones said. “But he has got us in position to win the division and got a team here that I firmly believe has the ability to be one of the better-playing teams at the end and in position to get in the playoffs. We see logically how to get in the playoffs, we have that, for all practical purposes, in our control. Now that's a pretty good spot to be in after 10 games. And so a lot of this story is to be played out. It does not have a bearing on whether or not he will be our coach next year

Seems like the Giants told Coughlin he was coaching for his job back in 07. Look how that ended up. Why would Garrett worry about changing anything and getting better? He is guaranteed his job next season.

If we lose the rest of our games Jerry will fire him and say that's what he was thinking "on that day" or something ludicrous like that. This is just him trying to keep the focus on the remainder of this season, in his own crazy way.

I am ready to move on from Garrett.

However, if the original poster is serious... and some other Cowboys fans followed along, I'm ok with Garrett returning for another year.

A couple pf tweets on the matter.

Ed Werder ESPN

My reaction to Jerry Jones saying Jason Garrett returns as HC in 2014? Maybe true but Wade Phillips heard assurances in days before firing.

Mike Greenberg ESPN

Did I hear what Jerry Jones said?
Yes, I did.
Do I think Jason Garrett will be the coach of the #Cowboys next year?
No, I do not.

Albert Breer NFLN

Jerry Jones said the same thing to me back in June. When he's asked that question directly, hard to answer any other way.

And here we see the culture of the Cowboys and why they will never win with Jerry running things.

It's good enough to be in the mix. It's good enough to have a chance to get in the playoffs after 10 weeks. Jerry is happy just to have a chance. If all the NFC East teams were 2-8, Jerry would be happy because his team would still control their destiny. They would still be in the mix. They would have a chance.

It's really pathetic. No more is there an expectation of winning. A demand to succeed. The only expectation now is to be in the mix. Having a chance is all that matters anymore.

If everybody around you is mediocre, then it's perfectly fine to be mediocre as well.

Jerry also said that he would never fire a head coach mid-season......see Wade.

Jones changes direction on a dime and there is no way he can sell Garrett to the fans if we miss the playoffs, no way. Now, if we win the division but lose the first game, chances are Garrett stays. Jerry can spin that to the fans and make some believe 2014 is the year.

That was his full answer? Not sure how some interpret that as being a guarantee that Jason will be back as the head coach next year. It's not even close to being a guarantee. I think Clarence needs to take some lessons on reading between the lines. Let me help...

Jerry: "It does not have a bearing on whether or not he will be our coach next year."

Translation: "By itself, whether or not we make the playoffs does not have a bearing on his status but our quality of play certainly does. If we continue to stink it up, I am most certainly going to consider going in a different direction."

In all seriousness I'm not surprised and you can't really use the Wade situation to negate his statement. Jason Garrett is Jerry's little project...he hand picked him and had him as a coach in waiting even before Wade was brought in.

I see Garrett being here next year with Callahan and/or Kiffen being this year's scapegoats.

That's what I thought too after reading the full quote. I didn't see any guarantee in there.

Jerry jones said Jason Garrett will return as coach next year. How they finish will not impact that. guaranteed Garrett's return in 2014.

Nice knowing you guys, Ive got some pills to go take.

Lol I believe him . He knows he screwed up hiring Callahan and Kiffen so this season is a wash . Next year with a new d coordinator will be the year he will really be evaluated .
