Jones wants Dez Bryant targeted even 'when he's double covered'

One of the few times I will actually agree with Jerry when it comes to actual football. All the good WRs are doubled and they see many more targets. If you allow a team to double and take away your best WR and you just accept it and never look his way, you are a failure of a coach. These excuses of him being doubled are getting tiring. Find him on the field more than what we have been doing.

In the first drive of the opening game in 2010 the Cowboys drive down the field on the Commanders, down to their 37.

Then the Cowboys bring in their 1st round pick, WR Dez Bryant, despite the fact that he didnt play a single down during the preseason.

On 1st and ten Romo throws a sideline to Bryant, tackled immediately. 2nd down, same exact play, same result. 3rd down, same play to Roy Williams on the other side incomplete.

The Cowboys punt, end of 1st drive of the season.

Coach Jones.....

That is what we get from Coach Jones.

Totally agree. But I worry we chose the wrong quarterback for this.

Starting in 2014 Romo only threw to dez when he had single coverage.

Dez had 136 targets and 88 catches in 2014, you can go to any game highlight and find Romo throwing to him when he was double covered.

Dez had more opportunities to be in single coverage in 2014 because Romo was healthy and DeMarco had a career year, but its laughable to say he was never targeted in double coverage in year where he averaged 8.5 targets per game.

What's it going to be then, eh?

That's nice, but frankly Jones has no idea what he is looking at.

He is looking at the Dallas Cowboys offense. One with a construct from Jason Garrett, run in part with Linehan.

And he sees an expensive talented player who is physical. So he says this.

What he does not understand is that WR doubled in our offense is quite different from other teams. Especially when we refuse to adjust.

The limitations of our system are very very profound. It is a rigid system that depends on you to basically beat your man.

Scheming a play open is almost an afterthought.

So I guess Dez will have another 1 catch game.
The idea Jerry should be saying isnt "force it", it should be scheme Dez into situations where hes not doubled.

If Dez played under a coach like Belichick, 1 for 8 would never happen.

Calvin Johnson 2011 or 2012 (not sure) for 299 yards. They eventually tried triple teaming him to no avail.
He was jumping over guys not (beating) the double team. So again, it's bs spouted by ignorant Cowboy fans that don't watch other teams play. Dez is the only wr that is flustered with double coverage. Sure thing cowboyszone

Coach jones is only half wrong. It's up to coach Garrett to figure out how to make it all right. It's not on Dez or anyone else.

It's on Dez to catch the ball and to control the ball when it is in his hands. Five times targeted, one catch.

Yea he should've caught the td. Other catches were iffy. Still he should get easier catches like screens and slants. Even a reverse would be nice

One, Jerry is an idiot when he pulls this stuff.

Two, I believe they do have situations where they expect Dez to be able to beat double coverage, and he probably is the read in some of those situations. That's not the same thing as saying you force the ball to Dez despite the coverage.

Three. Just get it over with already.

Ole Jerry is asking (demanding) a lot from a raw college QB. Hitting Bryant in double coverage would be difficult for an experienced QB. Jerry should talk to the media only when he is sober. Run the ball...give Prescott a chance.

You are right. Im thinking they can't throw the whole offense at Dak and gradually, he and Dez will build a rapor. I really do think Garrett wants to involve Dez more, it's just the reality of a rookie quarterback.

But again, I think the plan is to gradually add in more plays that will take advantage of Dezs running skills once he catches a short or mid range pass.

I also think that of you see it today, it had nothing to do with Jerry's comments..this time.

How so? I think Dak is fine if they take the constraints off him and let him do what he can do. It's hard to play sports in general if your coaches put so many chains on you and tie you down.

He'll be fine if we can run the ball today and we can avoid long down situations.

We need a bigger dose of Morris. Which should have happened last week. With Elliot's injury and limited time to practice and play during camp/preseason, he had a hard time getting used to the speed of the game and his vision and patience was lacking. He should get into his groove in the next few games.
