Jordan Shipley?

You don't draft Colt McCoy on this team. You just don't. There are too many other positions that you could draft that have a much bigger chance of making a marked impact on the team. Colt McCoy would be the third string quarterback at BEST, and camp fodder at the worst, with camp fodder being the 90% solution in this case.

You have to assess the roster, then needs, then wants. I applaud the outside-the-box thinking...but teams that draft like that don't end up doing much in the post-season or getting there at all in the first place.

I read a quote years ago when (I think it was) Tom Landry said the biggest mistake he ever made drafting was when they didn't draft Joe Montana -- because they had Danny White, and didn't need a QB.

He said that Montana was the highest ranked guy on his board, and he still should have taken him anyway.

Dallas has no real needs right now -- and IF you have him as a 1st or 2nd round talent -- and it is the 4th round, IMO you take him regardless of position. You can always trade him later for the higher pick IF he really has that talent.

I would agree. I have seen some decent OL player listed as later rd picks such as TCU Newhouse.

Is Colt McCoy the next Montana? No.

Joe Montana
Height: 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) Weight: 205 lb (93 kg)
NFL Draft: 1979 / Round: 3 / Pick: 82
Despite his performance on the field, Montana was not rated highly by most scouts. At one combine, Montana rated out as six-and-a-half overall with a six in arm strength, used to judge how hard and how far a prospect could throw the ball.

Colt McCoy
Height: 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) Weight: 216 lb (98 kg)
NFL Draft: Unknown
Opinions over McCoy's potential in the NFL has been mixed. Frank Cooney of USA Today notes that McCoy "fired mostly from a shotgun, has a low release point and might lack an NFL fastball." He is listed by Cooney as the 3rd best QB draft choice, behind Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen.

So Maybe Colt isn't a Montana -- yet to be seen. He was definitely a winning QB in college.

I am not sure how anyone knows that McCoy isn't a Montana when he has never played a down in the NFL yet though. Maybe he isn't, but in size he is close. Scouts seem to think about the same of him coming out of college as they did Montana. Who knows, opinions are opinions.

How do you know this?

I didn't think Montana would be very good when I watched him in the Cotton bowl, just thought he got lucky. That luck just seemed to stay with him for a long long time though.

I'm a big Horns fan and loved watching Colt however it seems many of the QB's who have come out of the spread offense have struggled in the NFL. Montana came out of a program who was already running more of a pro style offense and while there were question of Montana size and arm strength coming out of college I think there are more question marks with Colt,Tebow as well as Bradford. I wish the best to Colt but I would rather continue to work with McGee

Here is what's funny. I am an Aggie. I guess I value what has been done on the field as much as the potential. McGee may be great (certainly prototypical size and great arm strength), but McCoy I watched do it in college. He seems to be a very cerebral player. Why not get both?

My point on all this wasn't that Dallas should draft McCoy, but that if he is rated on your board as the 30th talent, and you are picking at 108 -- and the next closest guy on your board is 88th to 107th talent -- then you take the guy you have listed as the 30th talent because he is value at that point.

I really just used him as an example that kind of snowballed.

<edit>
might as well get Shipley as well, that way you have Shipleys high school and college QB's. Someone should be able to get him the ball......LOL

That is strange you being an Aggie fan and me being a Horns fan but see it a bit different. I think Colt was a good college player I just think he will struggle at the next level. I hope I'm wrong

As for the Cowboys situations I like having a vet like Kitna backing up he has the experiance to come into a game and keep things going. McGee is still being developed and learning I think adding a rookie would only slow that process down.

Maybe slow it down, and maybe push it a little and speed it up. I don't know how they would react.

I know if Romo goes down in a game, I'd want Kitna, but if he has a career ending something happen, I'd like several young guns to choose from. Kitna would be good, IMO, for 1-3 games and no more.

Dallas like most teams will only keep 3 QB's. I expect those QB's to Romo, Kitna and McGee at this stage. I think if McGee does start to show himself as a competent QB Dallas will move him to the #2 spot which would open the door for a rookie QB. I just don't see Dallas looking to a QB in a draft that many consider a weak QB class. As for should Romo get hurt Kitna would still be the better option even beyond 3 games over such raw player as McGee or a rookie

I've always wanted a white WR :) (no not racist cause I'm asian).... I've always been fascinated with "white" WRs b/c it's so different. Would love to see him here, I'd do 3rd round for Shipley for sure.

Crayton's replacement is already on the team.

Kevin Ogletree. Write it down, sign it, put it in an envelope, stamp it, ship it, receive it, and open it back up.

But, I wouldn't mind having another receiver on the roster as insurance. I would much rather have McCluster or Golden Tate over 4.57 Shipley. With Jason Garrett poised to take over the offense and the team more after this year and wanting to run a more explosive style offense (think New Orleans) players like Tate and McCluster make much more sense than Shipley.
alright im gonna do this one more time since there are 6 days left till the UT pro day.

mccluster ran a 4.53 at the combine, and guess what? ran faster at his pro day.

I like Shipley and would love to have him on the team. He is a very good WR, very good return man and even holds on extra points and FG and where he has used his skills in fake situation to keep the chains moving. I think the guy is a very heady player and is going to be a good pro

Shipley, Gilyard, or McCluster. Get us a guy who can return the ball and make a few plays in the slot with limited reps for a year or two before we put the vets out to pasture and then bam, full time starter born..

or Andre Roberts, Antonio Brown

True.

It's smarter to withhold judgement on Shipley until he runs at his pro-day.

yeah it just bothers me that dex ran a similar 40 to ship and everbody was like oh dex is so much faster than that but ship was automatically the slow white receiver and dropped from a 2/3 projection to a 3/4 while dex stock didnt bat an eye.
