Why is it unacceptable? The guy has gotten into the same trouble at two colleges and now in the NFL. I think the players and owners will eventually look to revamp their marijuana policies and maybe even during the next round of collective bargaining. For now Gordon knows the risks of smoking weed and he put himself in these positions time and time again. The rules are written out so clearly that a child could have issued this suspension. "Hey, kid. When you see a players name along with the words 'failed test #4' then you have to suspend him for a year". Kid, "Okay".

Then ban him from the league. Dont drag out the process so you impact multiple seasons. If you want to do that, ban him for multiple seasons.

Kinda shocked, based on the 1/2 positive result.

Wonder if there's more to it.

The reason it got dragged out is because Gordon appealed, which is his right and part of the rules developed by the league and players association.

Those same rules stipulate that the decision on appeal is to be made in a "reasonable time". This was not reasonable by any stretch.

Believe it or not, the NFL doesn't care about your timeframe for what is "reasonable".

Gordon's appeal was on Friday, August 1st and carried over to the following Monday, August 4th. It is now just over three weeks. I would say that is a reasonable time period.

I think Gordon and most other players really aren't being suspended or punished for smoking weed. I think they are being suspended for being dumb. The league has an image to maintain. They make it easy for players to pass their drug tests and at least give the impression they are fighting the so called good fight. So does college. When a player is dumb enough to fail multiple drug tests then he puts himself in a bad spot.

Just doesn't seem right that Ray Rice beating up his girlfriend gets him 2 games and Gordon having a small amount of weed in his system gets him a full year.

Why can't people seem to grasp that this is a third offense and the punishment reflects that?
Because some people judge the substance abuse policy as irrelevant. Dismissing the policy, which every player is aware of, is the only way to justify Gordon's non-compliance. He could continue violating the policy, but the argument will not change. Meanwhile, other players do their jobs without breaking any policy rules.

I hope one day the NFL can adopt the NBA's policy and not test for stuff as silly as weed.

Weed is harmless.

It may be but then again if it was no big deal why the hell would a player risk his career and millions in cash over something that is no big deal. Heck where I work we are tested as well and can cost your job if you test positive and we are not getting paid any where close to what these guys get. Silly? what is silly is flushing your career over weed.

I also agree with this. The policy is stupid but the players all signed up for it. Gordon needs to be smarter.

But let's save the suspensions for incidents of real consequence, though.

As you said this is what players agreed on, does not matter if you think it should be legal or not what does matter is these are the rules they have agreed to play under and anyone dumb enough to do it and have it cost them million really does have a problem with weed. As for the drug itself I agree with you no big deal but as I mentioned at my job we have rules as well and are tested and there is no way I will risk my job over something as minor as weed.

While I agree completely that Rice should have gotten a lot more for what he did there is a small problem with this. What you're saying, and several others are, is acting like this is the first time that Gordon has gotten into trouble for this.

It's not.

In fact it's a minimum of the third time, by the league agreement, for him to even be in any position to get a year suspension. Gordon is a complete idiot. It's really that simple. He knows the rules, he's been busted for breaking the rules twice already, and yet he's still too stupid to avoid yet again breaking said rule.

If you're that stupid then you deserve what you get from the league.

I guess he wanted to do the CFL and they said no. I'm kind of surprised they could say no actually. Must be something in either his contract or the overall NFLPA agreement with the league...?
