I guess he wanted to do the CFL and they said no. I'm kind of surprised they could say no actually. Must be something in either his contract or the overall NFLPA agreement with the league...?

He is suspended but still under contract to Cleveland. Not sure if Cleveland would even want him out there playing

This is such an ignorant statement. You can smoke weed regularly and not be an addict.

True but then again if it is no big deal then why do it when you know it will cost you big money and time suspended? It is not the 1st time if it was the punishment would have been fairly minor. He has ran into the same issue to where it is now costing him a year of play and big money. Sounds like a problem to me.

He would've been a first round draft pick had he not been a pot addict in college, cost him money that time, this will cost him more money, he's stupid.

Gordon, whose season-long suspension by the NFL was upheld on Wednesday, asked the Browns for permission to play for the Calgary Stampeders, a person familiar with the Pro Bowler's situation told The Associated Press on Thursday. However, a CFL rule that has been in place since 2006 bars any suspended NFL players under contract from playing.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks.

CFL spokesman Jamie Dykstra said the only way Gordon could play in the league is if he was released by the Browns and became a free agent. Former Indianapolis wide receiver LaVon Brazill, serving a four-game NFL drug suspension, signed last week with Toronto after being cut by the Colts.

The CFL's board of governors adopted the rule eight years ago after suspended running back Ricky Williams played one season for Toronto.

I don't know if they can really stop him. It would void his contract, which would be a big deal if he were making top dollar. Wouldn't he go to waivers or be a free agent if his contract voided?

I don't see how his contract would be voided. I guess he could leave the NFL and go to the CFL but he would not return until he served the punishment. He did this to himself and the NFL has every right to enforce their rules. After all the CBA included punishment of abuse.

well, the punishment is a year ban from the NFL, not football, so a year in the CFL, would still allow him to apply for reinstatement

The CFL rules won't allow him to play in their league while he is under contract with an NFL team.

I was reading that the attempt to go to the CFL was possibly because he knew he would get a "no" and it would give him ammo if he were to file an injunction. It's all a weird case.

Didn't Ricky Williams? Maybe he was a free agent, not quite sure

Ricky Williams did in fact play in the CFL while suspended by the NFL and still under contract. The CFL has changed their rules since that occurred because there apparently was a bit of a backlash. There was a link to an article about it earlier in this thread, but it was easy to overlook.
