Peppers contract details
March, 8, 2010 Mar 85:56PM ETComment Email Print Share By Kevin SeifertESPN's Adam Schefter has the annual breakdown of the six-year contract Chicago gave defensive end Julius Peppers.

If he plays the entire length of the deal, Peppers will receive at last $84 million. The base salaries in each of his first three seasons are guaranteed, for a total of $40.5 million. He'll have a chance to earn an additional $7.5 million in incentives, for a possible total of $91.5 million over the length of the deal.

Here are Peppers' annual base salaries:
2010: $20 million
2011: $11.5 million
2012: $9 million
2013: $13 million
2014: $14 million
2015: $16.5 million
TOTAL: $84 million

As Peter King of Sports Illustrated points out, it's key for Peppers to receive his highest salary this season, the year before a possible NFL work stoppage.

Ware's contract for comparison sake:

DeMarcus Ware's contract numbers are as follows:

Ware received a $20 million signing bonus and had $5 million of salary added to this year's contract. He also receives $500,000 a year in workout bonuses from 2011 through 2015.

* 2010 - $7.8 million
* 2011 - $6.7 million
* 2012 - $4.5 million
* 2013 - $5.5 million
* 2014 - $12.25 million
* 2015 - $13.75 million

Total Salary: $50.5 million
Signing Bonus: $20 million
Additional 2009 salary: $5 million
Incentives: $2.5 million
Total: $78 million

(Note: autographied $1 bill from Jerry - priceless)

His $20 million signing bonus can only be prorated over 5 years, since 2009 is the Final Capped Year (see Proration above). This means that the prorated portion of the bonus has a yearly impact of $4 million. So this year's cap number for the Cowboys was just increased by $9 million.

Adding the prorated bonus amounts to the salary, the cap hit is:

* 2010 - $11.8 million
* 2011 - $10.7 million
* 2012 - $8.5 million
* 2013 - $9.5 milliom
* 2014 - $16.25 million
* 2015 - $14.75 million

Now add the workout bonuses to 2011 and 2015, plus the additional salary money he got this year:

* 2009 - $5 million
* 2010 - $11.8 million
* 2011 - $11.2 milliom
* 2012 - $9 million
* 2013 - $10 million
* 2014 - $16.75 million
* 2015 - $14.25 million

Grand Total: $78,000,000

Plus, of course, the extra buck from Jerry...

Wow. That's a whole lot of money.

But the key factor there is that he has to get all the way through it to earn at least the 84 million. He'll never even get close to finishing out that contract there.

The key factor is $40 million guaranteed over three years. That's a major bet. Given the odds of injury, it would make me nervous...if I was a Bears fan. Of course, they can't draft anyone, so they have to make big plays on the free agency market, especially since the expectations last year were so high. If Cutler continues to stink, it won't matter much who they sign on defense.

I'd like to see the Bears make a push in the North. The Lions aren't doing it, and somebody needs to give the Brett Favre Viker Packings a run for their money. Contract is insane, but I like the first two signings. Would like to see Brandon Marshall go there to really show a splash.

Man, Jerry is such an idiot.

How so? You think Peppers is going to even make it through year 3? You think DeMarcus is some greedy guy that wanted to top out the salary cap and break the organizations ability to sign more guys long term? Come on.

Favre's going to hit a lot more in the division this year than last. Bears picked up Peppers who has tasted The Great One's blood, also Lions picked up a pretty decent DT and signed Vanden Bosch in the offseason. He's definately going to face some more pressure this season if he comes back, and that's a good thing for the rest of the NFC.

Pretty sure that was sarcasm.
