Wow.. they are telling numbers eh..Let me start off by saying I'm a huge fan of this years draft class.....with that said though we need to be realistic about expectations for these guys. I say this not because I don't want fans to be excited about the Cowboys, but we do a disservice to the players every year by putting so much on their shoulders. Last year Tyler Guyton....the hype machine took him up to the moon only for him to come crashing back down. Similar with Caelen Carson after a hot preseason. 7th rounder Justin Rogers was labeled as a quick fix big body 1T to fix the run game....didnt even make the roster.
Last year in all the NFL here is how many players were regular starters by round:
1st round - 20/32 players
2nd round - 12/32 players
3rd round - 7/36 players
4th round - 6/35 players
5th round - 3/41 players
6th round - 1/44 players
7th round - 0/37 players
Entire draft class - 49/257 picks were starting players (Just 6 of those players were voted to a pro bowl)....Now I'm sure there were some guys not considered "regular starters" that came on late in the year to get some starts or were valuable role players as well, but on the flip side there were also some very bad rookie starters who were liabilities for their teams as well.
Really with the draft I think the number you want to focus on is 1.5....Can you get more than 1.5 multi year starting caliber players out of any draft for your team. If so its typically a pretty good draft. If you can get 1 along with some really solid role players its typically a pretty solid class as well.
To half these guys from the Cowboys draft class just making the team is going to be a success story. Be patient with these guys, enjoy the small victories when they happen throughout their individual journeys, but lets keep level heads when they get overhyped as well....not fair to these guys who really have the odds stacked against them for the most part.
Send them to Jerry and Air Quotes so they can understand why you need to use Free Agency.
