This is why I laugh at how perceptions are. I watched the DLine (in the first half anyway) and thought DMoore was the best DE on the field followed closely by Tapper and then a big drop before Neal and Taco. With that said, I am unsure who missed assignments because the interior of Carrell (sp?) and Ivie were so bad that they had no push what so ever and were man handled basically every play. DMoore shot down inside quickly to stop runs and was held (without call) quite a few times. Tapper flashed some speed and a quick first step. Neal has a little size and strength, but Taco seemed to be a tweener. Taco wasn't quick enough to speed rush and not strong enough to bull rush and not big enough to just hold ground. I am not saying that he won't develop, but IMO, he has a ways to go.

With this said, all of the DE's would have looked better with a better push from the interior which I didn't see anytime in the first half. DE's using quickness were just shoved around the back and no pressure up the middle to move the QB backwards. Gabbart had a beautiful pocket most of the time.
Several times, I saw Tapper get close on the edge, but the OL was able to push/run him around the pocket. I'm sure he will figure out how to keep that from happening with more reps. I think he will perform well this year.

And speaking of not having pressure on the middle of the pocket, once we have the first string tackles playing, maybe they will be able to keep the QB from having so much room to step up and away from the pressure on the edges.

while I agree that they deserve more PT, it will be interesting to see if they get that as 1st and 2nd teamers get THEIR time on the field...for example, if you see Gathers getting PT against the other team's first unit, then you might have something

I agree, I wasn't saying in my post that Gathers is going to move up the depth chart. But I think he showed enough that he will be kept on the roster, even if he is only active for a few games where they like the DB matchups and need him on ST. But he seems to have shown the progress in this game that he will be kept on the roster.

They did the same thing with Miles Austin years ago, he was a very raw, very athletic WR who was on the roster but didn't play. Gathers is even more raw than Austin and even with Austin having played college football, he still took two years on the roster to develop.

Yeah man, the DTs were getting completely mauled inside. That alone skews the evaluation of the surrounding players. Almost like trying to evaluate WRs with a QB who can't read a defense.

But the evaluation skews both ways. That WR should still be able to catch the ball if he is playing against 3rd string DBs who aren't going to make an NFL roster.

Nick Eatman says Rico needs work on blocking still. He messed up a couple of assignments and got pushed into the backfield blocking during the game. The link is above

Nick Eatman also called out players using a 3+ year old roster in the Blue/White scrimmage a couple of years ago. He didn't even know the players he was calling out had been gone for 3 years. He thought #35 was Keon Lattimore who had been gone for 3 years. Eatman is with the team every day and does not know the players without a roster.

Eatman is dumb. There's no other way to put it.

Having said that, obviously Rico needs work on his technique. If he didn't at this point considering his lack of experience, it would be some type of miracle.

The issues is that Rico showed excellent physical ability to block and had several terrific blocks. That's all you can expect from player in his situation.
