Keep Vaughn, dump Weeden

It's unsettling how much we downgraded at the backup QB position. If we were to find ourselves in contention for a playoff spot and lost Romo for a two- or- three-game stretch, we're toast. Weeden doesn't deserve a roster spot from what I've seen.

Tonight was a tough one for the young quarterback, Vaughan...sometimes those provide the most learning.

So is Vaughn the new Matt Moore, Alex Tanney.....and list of other players that people hold in high regard when in reality every team in the league has a player like this on the PS?

He's the Case Keenum from 2012. Lots of hype but is there any substance? IDK

There's another one.

Fact is, every team has guys like this on their roster. Everyone. Could he be claimed? Maybe. But as of right now he's just another prospect qb who may have potential to be.....well we don't even know yet.

I just don't get the fear of possibly losing him. You lose him then what? The Cowboys are done? There will be plenty of NFL prospects in the upcoming drafts who have potential to be starting qb's in this league. It doesn't start or end with Vaughn. But its the intrigue of finding that diamond in the ruff and the scout in fans that want people to waste a roster spot on a guy who won't see the field.

I now agree with you on this issue. Running the practice squad offense will do him good.

I would let Weeden go and have Vaughan as a developmental back up. If Romo goes down our offense suffers this season no matter who is under center.

The Browns dumped this guy. What else is there to say.

I think it would. I highly doubt this guy is going to be scooped up by some team and if he does so be it. He's not ready to be on anyone's 53 man roster.

This was the comments by Broaddus tonight:

Dustin Vaughan did not have a productive game, numbers-wise, but he once again proved his ability to hang in the pocket, read the defense and attempt to make a good throw. He took a physical beating behind an offensive line that really struggled and was able to live to tell about it.

Fair enough...

That's what I've been saying. Weeden isn't a guy to groom and isn't significantly better than Vaughan would be, not that it even matters. If Romo is out, the team is done. They barely tread water with him, and unless Weeden can perform on that level the team won't survive Romo's absence.

Why do you guy say this? I just always wondered where the "If Romo is done this team's done" mantra comes from.....i'm sure there were some that said when Bledsoe got benched for Romo the Cowboys were done.

Because Weeden isn't as good as Romo. Are you going to argue otherwise? I would hope not. The team is 8-8 with Romo, so it's not really a shock people would predict less wins with a lesser QB.

This relationship between loss of starting QB and season going downhill isn't unique to Dallas. Very few teams would actually survive.

Weeden isn't any good so why not just keep a possible useful QB prospect? With this defense the offense is going to be playing from behind every week anyway so what does it matter who the QB is if Romo misses any time? I have no idea if Vaughn is any good but I KNOW Weeden isn't any good so that makes the answer to this question pretty clear to me.

I like Vaughn. I think he can play.

Don't know if they keep on the roster. Sure, he looks good to us, but I don't see the high demand for him. Who's going to make a spot on their roster for a developmental 3rd QB, who's looked OK--but nothing spectacular--in preseason?

Vaughn is not even close to being ready for the NFL. And he won't be this year. He will be on the practice squad. No one is going to take him. If it ever came to us needing a 3rd QB for real playing time, it would be Hanie getting a call.

I rather go with Vaughan too.

If Romo were to go down, our already shaky percentage of going to the playoffs goes close to 0%.

At that point, might as well see what the young guy can do with our weapons and against #1 defenses.

Didn't see any of the game so I can't make an educated comment. Relying on the posts ... but what I'm reading, not good about Weeden.

Keep Vaughn and dump Weeden? Are you serious? Truth: Weeden isn't anything but a backup and Vaughan isn't nearly ready yet.

Weeden has a fantastic arm, but that's his issue as well. He thinks he can fire it in to double coverage like Farve use to do. Newsome bailed him out on what should have been the second pick from Tony Carter.
