Keeping Melton won't be difficult

Which is EXACTLY why you retain him NOW. His price tag (or anyone else' that we sign to replace him) isn't going to be any cheaper in 2016 or 2017.

They have a deal in place, but it's one that pays him an average of $8 per season.

Are you OK with that amount?

I'm thinking we go with a youth movement and have Crawford start there and add at least two more defensive linemen in the upcoming draft.

Some folks think we can just throw money at everybody but I don't think there's quite that much to go around.

I think Melton has played great and he get his. Sometimes the business side of NFL wears me out.

Romo's contract was made to restructure. There is no future beyond the few remaining years of his career. When Romo retires, then you "bite the slug".................go 3-13 and draft his replacement.

Why does it have to be over once romo leaves? Any player is replaceable... yes QB is harder to replace, but not so difficult u need to just start rebuilding... I believe it's more important to find a QB that fits a system and groom him for the future. I don't like waiting til u NEED a QB then drafting the highest one coming out and hoping he does well... the Patriots have been looking for bradys replacement for 4 years with mallet and now galpo. They don't plan on giving up the playoffs

And that's why you make sure Dez is fed before you think about who else you can bring in.

That's not a slam dunk for me.

I don't know any concrete terms, but if he's looking for Megatron money, I'm saying no, especially if Demaryius Thomas and Randal Cobb actually hit the open market.

Thats how Jerry operates. He is not going to invest a high draft pick in a QB until Romo is done. The Patriots are the league model for consistency. They are what dallas was in the 70's and early 80's.

Nobody is getting Megatron money.

We keep hearing that contract thrown out and it's foolishness.

Just like Demarco isn't getting All Day money.

I sure hope so, but I'll reserve judgment either way until I hear some actual numbers.

As much as I'm not assuming the asking prices won't be huge, I'm not assuming that anybody's coming cheap nor that these negotiations are easy or foregone conclusions.

You know as well as I do, the vast majority trend upwards. If you want to show me specific examples otherwise with this team, it would be great for the conversation.

It's not just with any specific teams, but you can see certain positions don't get paid certain years. WR and DE are great examples recently where players didn't get nearly what they expected.
