Sounds like Bill Bates, Kenny Gant and any number of great NFL special teams aces. Seems like every Superbowl team has one.

Too bad this team doesn't have one.

Unfortunately, he is a bad safety, and if he has to play there at all, we'll be wishing it was someone else. As I recall, he was in on last years problematic ST groups as well.

At least with Davis, they'd know what they are getting: Unlike a lot of those 'I recognize his name! Let's sign him' - L'il Danny Snyder type moves.

.

And once again I ask how does that make him any different than Kenny Gant, Bill Bates and any number of special teams aces. Kenny Gant in coverage was an absolute trainwreck.

It just boils down to a very simple question to me ... do you believe special teams matter or not? If you believe special teams matter, this is a no brainer. If you believe special teams are the throw away units, be prepared to live with throw away performances and throwaway results. Also be prepared to spend another offseason how you get beat in a playoff game when you had twice the total yards of your oppeonent.

FWIW, Keith Davis was injured in the Bears game where we shutdown Hester. He missed the next two games .... we gave up a TD return in special teams in each of them. Davis came back and finished out the season injured and had surgery at the end of the season.

We've done a fairly solid job of continuing that streak of ineptitude this preseason.

The cowboys wanted to resign Davis so I can see this working out. Davis left because he wanted to see if he can find a starting job but he still has connections with Dallas. We can use all the help on special teams.

REPORT: FINS TO CUT KEITH DAVIS
Posted by Mike Florio on August 27, 2008, 8:45 p.m.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins will release safety Keith Davis.

Davis was signed as a free agent earlier this year, one of Bill Parcells’ North-Texas-to-South-Florida Pipeline moves.

Salguero points out that Davis has been performing well on special teams, and that the Fins already are a couple of spots under the current 75-man roster limit. Moreover, Davis was on the list of persons flying to New Orleans for Thursday night’s game against the Saints.

So, apparently, something happened fairly recently to get Davis in the doghouse

I'll bet it was something like Parcells got word that he was hitting the strip clubs down there...

I thought they reported this morning on Fox radio that he was involved in some threat to beat up some girls boyfriend. I heard it once, but they didn't repeat it on the next update. Again, this is a rumor because I was half paying attention on my drive into work.

Absolutely not.

He was a bad safety and most have conveniently forgotten that he was part of the special teams units that haven't looked that great the last couple of years.

Bill Bates was a special teams "ace".

Kenny Gant was a special teams "ace".

Keith Davis is not now, nor was he a special teams "ace".

Why we would cut a player who could contribute to playing a regular position (i.e. Brown) in exchange for Davis' bullet riddled rear-end is beyond me.

Jason Allen and Yeremiah Bell are going to be a really good pair of safeties. KD was just insurance - expensive insurance that got cut when the people in charge decided the young guys were good enough, or that they were confident that Bell had recovered sufficiently from his injury.

Miami was too dangerous a place for a bullet magnet like Davis anyway.

Kind of hard to practice to the sound of repeated gun shots. :D

We were second in the NFL in kickoff coverage in 2006.

It was only last year we were bad.

When Keith Davis missed two games and we gave up a TD return in each of them.

Id take him back, he added attitude and knew where he was supposed to be, and at least hed be able to direct other players and help them learn the scheme.

The kickoff/punt coverage wasn't so great when he was in there last year either.

If the Cowboys sign him-- cool.

But I'm doubting that they will.

For Parcells to release him you have to wonder what the unspecified reason is.

But yeah bring him back and cut Brown now.

K.Davis: Coach, please wear the Man-zeer! ;)

Parcells: Why you little %^&$#@*!!! That's it, I'm deleting you!

Okay, I have a purely selfish question. Does this mean we lose the Compensatory pick we would have received for having lost his services?

so everyone gets cut for drug related reasons.

geez i think god does this to me on purpose.

I'll one up ya on conspiracy theories. many people have said over the last year that BP has totally taken advantage of JJ in the two teams dealings. I still think that alot of wink-wink, nudge nudge things are going on between the two.

Getting Zach Thomas for nothing was one example.

Maybe it became clear that KD wasn't going to be starting and he'd just be the same ST ace he was in Dallas. Maybe KD wants to come back here and try for a ring. Maybe BP is just doing the guy another favor.

When you talk about the "official" dealings between Dallas and Miami of late, Miami has the advantage, but the under the table moves even it out.

We'll see what happens....

(on a side note. I'm a bit concerned about KD and Pac being on the same team. :D . Pac doesn't need a bullet magnet standing so close to him. (j/k))

How is getting Zach Thomas for nothing "taking advantage of JJ?"
