NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones knew Moore wanted a fresh start and allowed him out of his contract.
"After continuing through our end of season review process and having additional discussion, Kellen and the Cowboys reached a mutual decision to part ways. I want to thank Kellen for his deep commitment, hard work and dedication that were a core part of his time with the Cowboys," head coach Mike McCarthy said in a statement. "The production of our offense and his mentorship of Dak were at the center of Kellen's impact, and we are grateful for his tenure and leadership. We wish Kellen and his wife, Julie, and their family the absolute best as they set out on the next chapter of their lives."

There were plenty of expiring contracts, but what is clear is, if Jerry fired Moore, he would still owe him money for his final year. The fact that the Chargers requested an interview a week prior to even announcing his hire, while Moore has connections to Herbert and LVE through some commercials in Idaho seems to support this position. This request by the Chargers also PRECEDED Dallas announcing it won't renew any expiring contracts, including Joe Philbin. Coupled with the fact, as @NotForLong pointed out, Jerry owns the rights to box seats for the Chargers, it all points to a move on Kellen Moore' part.

It is also being reported that MM is not changing the offense, but will call plays. Since Prescott is too expensive to move this next year, maybe Jerry doesn't really have high expectations this season.

I thought that was obvious with the way things played out with the Chargers.

Moore wants to be a HC and he knew Dak was ruining those chances for him.

I said weeks ago that if Moore was smart he would make a lateral move and that's just what he did.

Good for him.

Tanking in 2023 will be difficult with all the crap teams in the NFL but we can do it!

I only wish KM could have convinced Dak to come to La La Land with him.

He could only make a lateral move if the Cowboys allowed him too. Jerry didn't even allow Callahan to bounce after the feud with Garrett, but made him stay his final year of the contract, though he wanted out. The only way Moore could bounce outside of that is if the move was to a HC position, which the Panthers interview was.

The fact that Jerry allowed him and it's being emphasized it was mutual is telling.

Bobby Belt said the same thing on the radio. That he definitely wanted out and that he might have been fed up with take the brunt of the criticism.
A poster pointed out Herbert films commercials with a certain advertiser with Moore and LVE in Idaho. Obviously Herbert probably has a fan following there, as he is from Oregon and Moore from Boise State. So they must know each other very well and since Lombardi was fired and SD requested an interview A WEEK PRIOR to the announcement, Moore and Herbert must have talked and Herbert may have spoken to the SD FO that he wanted to play for Moore.

The fact Jerryy allowed it with one year left on the contract is interesting.

It is interesting these stories you make up in your head to insist on your dislike of football player.

We can go by what Moore and Dak have actually said about their relationship or we can go by your delusions. . . .

I didn't think McCarthy would change the offense. Too much work to get everyone on the same page with a new scheme, concepts and language. The offense at its core is productive. Add some new wrinkles to the concepts of the scheme, create better balance and situational nuances with the play calling to help make the offense more consistent.

Moore wants to be a HC and Dak doesn't work well enough in his offense to make that happen.
