Kendrick Lamar to perform halftime show - Super Bowl LIX. New Orleans

I always find the comment section of these announcements funny. You can guarantee any rap artist to be named to any sort of event, the comments will read like this:
"Who? "Never heard of him/her" "I definitely won't be watching" "Rap sucks"

Those same people also get overly excited for music like Springsteen, Kiss, U2, Paul McCartney, or whatever generic country acts are out now days. It's like a badge of honor to show the world they don't keep up with rap or new music. The halftime shows, commercials or the overall presentation of the Super Bowl has never been catered to the hardcore football fan. It's always catered to the opposite. The people attending the Super Bowl parties just for the commercials, halftime show and the theatrics around the game.

The NFL most likely aren't going to bring in bands and artists in their 70s/80s to perform halftime of the Super Bowl. Rap is extremely popular worldwide and Kendrick Lamar, know him or not, like him or not, is probably one of the most popular acts right now. Just had a very publicized and popular beef with another huge act, Drake. It was all the craze this year. Their diss songs to each other were at the top of charts. Kendrick's diss was played everywhere. Kendrick Lamar and Drake have been extremely popular for a little over a decade. It's ok if you don't know them. Your parents and grandparents had these same exact views to your music growing up and you scoffed at them. The views people had on rap, the older generations had on Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, etc. Every generation thinks their music is superior and the younger generation's musical tastes and artists are terrible.

Some people live in a very tiny bubble.
