Because he is 20 lbs overweight and lost his fire when Kelly Rowland stole his Mojo.......

And Kenny Phillips at 22 would be fine by me. He can cover, has range and isnt afraid to tackle. And above all he plays with confidence. Something our 240 lb safety lost 3 years ago.

Like I said in my previous reply, I like Phillips, but I don't see the Boys using 1 of their first 3 picks to draft him. They really like Patrick Watkins and want to see him eventually land a starting job. Maybe if Phillips drops way down in the 2nd round, but I don't see that happening.

No why??? Are you?

I think there has been a trend of smaller safeties the last few years as rules really help the Offesne and the passing games. What is going on....I feel like I am in bizarro world or something.

So then....help me understand why Roy struggles then?

No, I'm not kidding.

Make a blanket statement, such as the one you made earlier, is not usually a good policy.

Before we go down this path, I'd probably recommend that we define Big Safety is.

Currently, the smallest Safety we have on the roster is Courtney Brown at 6-1 205. That's not small IMO. Clearly, we have not subscribed to this latest trend you are reporting. I don't consider our Safeties as small.

I would also point out that you make no distinction between Free and Strong. Obviously, your strong safety is probably going to be bigger then your Free, depending on the scheme, probably significantly bigger.

Of the top 10 or so Safeties in this years class, all are 6 ft. or taller and all are over 200 lbs with the exception of Smith and he is listed at 199 lbs. None of those guys are small IMO.

If you review the drafts dating back to 2000, here is what you find for players drafted in the first two rounds.

LaRon Landry 6-1 214
Mike Griffin 6-0 202
Reggie Nelson 6-0 198
Brandon Meriweather 5-11 195
Eric Weddle 5-11 203
Gerald Alexander 6-0 204
Mike Huff 6-0 200
Jason Allen 6-1 213
Jimmy Williams 6-3 212
Donte Whitner 5-10 208
Josh Bullucks 6-1 207
Roman Harper 6-1 200
Brodney Pool 6-2 205
Nick Collins 5-11 200
Sean Taylor 6-3 220
Bob Sanders 5-8 206
Madue Williams 6-1 203
Michael Boulware 6-3 220
Sean Jones 6-1 225
Troy Polamalu 5-10 207
Ken Hamlin 6-2 206
Brian Scott 6-1 219
Mike Doss 5-10 207
Terrence Kiel 5-11 207
Roy Williams 6-0 225
Tank Williams 6-2 223
Lamont Thompson 6-1 215
Ed Reed 5-11 200
John McGraw 6-3 208
Will Allen 6-1 200
Adam Archuleta 5-11 215
Gary Baxter 6-2 210
Mike Brown 5-10 207
Deon Grant 6-2 215
Kenoy Kennedy 6-1 215
Traveras Tillman 6-1 205

37 players drafted at the position, only two are under 200 lbs. This would seem to say that teams are not drafting small Safeties or they would clearly be drafting them. Not happening.

Anthoney Smith 5-11 195
Von Hutchinson 5-10 180
Reggie Nelson 5-11 198
Jon Leonhard 5-8 185
Cameron Worrell 5-11 194
Chris Crocker 5-11 198
Danieal Manning 5-11 198

Of the 64 starting Safeties in the NFL last season, only 7 were under 200 lbs and really, only Hutchinson was way under. If they were moving towards smaller safeties, it would seem that more would be starting. They aren't.

As for Roy, well, Roy is what he is. I never thought he was very good in coverage and that's no secret. What's your point?

Funny...most of the good ones are the smaller ones...weird.

Phillips long gone by 22?????

No way.

IMO/FWIW.

Philly's likely looking for Dawk's long-term replacement, FWIW. Which is why even if he DOESN'T get picked in the Top 15, he'll eventually be gone by the time #22 rolls around.

NO to Philips!

He maybe the best S from this draft but he's probably not even in the top 5 DB in this draft.

I rather draft two more starting quality CBs than use a high pick on a S, even IF we get Pacman. We got two starting CBs over 30 and injured over the past season. We need depth and new blood for the future. CB is worth alot more than S.

We can always play three CB with one FS over the top and sit RW on the side.

Safeties are virtually impossible to evaluate from a fan standpoint. Particularly college safeties. I can't see why anyone would have a strong opinion one way or the other.
