Hi fellow couch-experts...

What are your thoughts on Kevin Burnett? Every year I get super excited thinking they are finally going to use this guy as a playmaker, and every year it doesn't happen. At least this year he started in the nickel and played well.

My point is, I personally don't feel it is him, I feel he should be out there and could be the fiery leader we need on D (a role he did well for UT (Witten's UT)). When he is out there he plants people, can run like the wind, and just seems catalytic where others do not.

Obviously I'm missing something, any ideas what it is? I don't think it can be a size thing, especially with Phillips in town. Is it just his shaky health? thanks

I think he would be starting on most teams as a 4-3 OLB

Starting to really love the guy!!! He can cover dang good!!! Man he could play safety too. Thank goodness he's starting to come on after a couple years of squat.

I think a lot of people have been guilty of overrating this player over the last few years. I think he's a good athlete that has impressed at times, but overall is destined to be a quality backup linebacker.

I think a lot of people that know how fast he is automatically correlate that to "he's a great coverage linebacker". I don't think he is. IMO, he's just as lost in coverage out there as James or Ayodele.

I think some people that cover the Cowboys have been guilty of getting fans over excited about a decent football player...leading them to believe he is something more than he actually is.

I like Burnett as a good backup, but nothing more. Spectacular diving over the pile goaline stops during training camp will no longer fool me into thinking Burnett is special.

...and I think this is his last year here.

I think it is his Job after Zach is gone. In the meantime he will be splitting time with Zach. I always liked the guy.

Future Starting LBers: Ware, Burnett, James/Carpenter, Spencer.

I still got faith in Carpenter. Hopefully he shows us something this year.

No he didnt. He was horrible in coverage. He only played nickel which translated to about 20 snaps a game. In about 320 snaps he defended a whopping 2 passes and didnt pick off a single pass. He was more of a liability in coverage than Williams was as he consistently failed to get deep enough in his drops and allowed completions behind him. How do you think he ended up with so many tackles in pass defense?

To give you a bit of perspective, Carpenter defended more passes in the Seattle playoff game than Burnett did all of the 2007 season.

In short he was awful and i personally wouldnt cry if he were cut or traded.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel.

I hope this is a joke.

I think Wade will be looking for his kind of ILBs in the next couple of drafts (mid rounds)and maybe some cheap fa types.

Why because you think that him getting PT translated into him not sucking? The metric confirm my opinion.

I forget when his contract runs up I think after next season? However, he seems like a guy who will walk so he can become a starter in a 4-3. To small to be a inside guy in a 3-4 doesn't have the pass rush skills to start in OUR 3-4 as an OLB.

When we 1st drafted him everyone was saying that he was looking better than Ware in TC. Unfortunately he kept on getting hurt and never had the chance to really get on the field. Recently he has been getting time and is proving he can play. I think he got a bright future!!!

heres a good post by YR on Burnett.

Dallas needs to get better in pass coverage at Ayodele, Burnett, and Ellis' spot. All were putrid in coverage last season. Ware is decent enough and Bradie started off a bit slow, but came on strong in coverage at the end of the season.

Dallas had good numbers in yards allowed per attempt and QB rating allowed last season, but a lackluster completion % allowed and they were terrible against TE's (31st) and RB's (23rd) in pass defense.

Going beyond what I charted, those stats pretty much confirm that Dallas has some issues with the pass coverage of the LB's since the good ypa and QB rating allowed, but the lackluster completion % allowed indicates that QB's did have some difficulty throwing deep/to WR's, but they didn't have difficulty throwing short. And the TE and RB in the pass defense numbers further indicate an LB problem as while safeties do cover TE's, LB's are responsible for that as well and usually take on most tailbacks in pass coverage.

So if we can getter somebody who can cover better than Ayodele and Burnett and another player who can cover better than Ellis (hopefully that's Spencer), they'd likely see a much, much better pass defense.

This was good stuff, which pretty much cements, what I believe was a bigger issue regarding our defense than the nickel CB position. Our LBs in coverage flat-out sucked.
